AMA Empowers Assembly Members through In-House Capacity Building Training

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) recently spearheaded a three-day in-house capacity-building training program, aimed at enhancing the proficiency of its Assembly Members embers in local governance affairs. Led by the esteemed Presiding Member, Honorable Alfred Asiedu Adjei, popularly known as PAAJOE , the program convened at the Royal Lee Hotel in Tutu, within the Akwapem North District of the Eastern Region, from May 8th to May 11th.

In his welcoming address, the Presiding Member underscored the importance of the gathering, emphasizing the commitment of assembly members to the city’s advancement. With the support of Mayor Honorable Elizabeth NKT Sackey and the entire AMA, the event served as a platform for participants to bolster their knowledge and skills crucial for effective governance and development initiatives in Accra.

The training sessions delved into various pertinent topics, including Ghana’s Decentralisation Policy & Local Governance System, Deliberative Functions, Legislative Functions, Executive Functions, and Oversight Responsibilities of Assembly Members. Facilitated by seasoned experts Mr. Frederick Oduro, a local government expert, and Dr. Richard Amankwa Agyepong, the lead consultant of the program. The sessions provided valuable insights and practical guidance.

A noteworthy highlight of the training was the visit from Honorable Members of the Akwapem North District, led by Honorable Ben Boafo the Assembly Member of Amanorkrom, who shared invaluable experiences and perspectives on local governance, enriching the discourse.

In his closing remarks, the Presiding Member expressed gratitude to all participants for their active engagement and dedication throughout the training. He commended their enthusiasm and eagerness to serve Accra with excellence, urging them to apply the insights gained to uphold principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability.

The collective praise from AMA Assembly Members for the Mayor of Accra and the management of AMA underscored the significance of the training in enhancing skills and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Furthermore, the Presiding Member reiterated the critical role of subcommittee chairpersons in the effective functioning of the assembly. He emphasized that the proactive and effective performance of subcommittees is instrumental in shaping policy decisions before they reach the Executive Committee and General Assembly meetings for deliberation and decision-making.

The successful conclusion of the capacity-building training reflects AMA’s commitment to empowering its members and fostering positive change in Accra, ensuring a resilient and prosperous future for the city and its residents.
