Bubune Biana wins 2024 Ms. Geek Ghana Competition

Bubune Biana Bottozah, a 21-year-old Level 300 student from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in the Western Region, has been crowned the 2024 Ms. Geek Ghana.

The competition, held in Accra, was fiercely contested, showcasing the talents and innovations of young women in ICT.

The Ms. Geek Ghana competition is an all-female ICT event designed to bridge the digital gender divide and encourage more girls to pursue STEM-related courses.

Launched by the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization, the 2024 contest sought innovative, scalable, and feasible ICT solutions from young women aged 13 to 21 across the country.

The grand finale, which took place at the Accra City Hotel on August 8, 2024, featured 10 finalists presenting their innovations to a panel of judges.

Bubune Biana emerged as the winner and will be groomed to represent Ghana at the Ms. Geek Africa Contest during the Transform Africa Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2025.

As the winner, Bubune received GH¢10,000, a laptop, a plaque, a certificate, and the opportunity to represent Ghana at the Ms. Geek Africa Competition in Nairobi next year.

Speaking at the event, the Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, praised all the finalists and assured that the ministry would work diligently to prepare for the Ms. Geek Africa Contest.

She revealed that the competition received a total of 66 applications from across the country, with 15 top ICT solutions being selected for the finals.

“I want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of our judges and selection team in critically analyzing the applications to ensure that the deserving candidates were shortlisted,” she added.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful emphasized that Ghana is on the brink of a digital revolution, and the ministry recognizes that gender equality is not just an aspirational goal but a fundamental necessity.

She expressed the government’s commitment to this cause, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
