Cedi Rise Due to Global Factors, Not Gov’t Strategy – NPP’s Awuku Claims

A Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Patrick Awuku, has downplayed claims that the Ghana cedi’s recent marginal appreciation against the US dollar is the result of strategic economic measures by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking during a panel discussion on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie, hosted by Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Patrick Awuku argued that the movement in the dollar is more reflective of global economic dynamics than any intervention by the Ghanaian government.

“The NDC has done no magic to bring the dollar down. They should tell us what exactly they’ve done,” – he said. “When Trump came into power, his actions and misdeeds are what weakened the dollar. That’s what’s playing out globally — not NDC policy.”

The Ghana cedi has seen slight appreciation in recent weeks, sparking political debate about the impact of local policy versus international market forces.

However, Patrick Awuku was quick to question the real-life benefits of the dollar’s fall, especially in the context of Ghana’s ongoing energy crisis.

“We’re happy about the cedi gaining strength, but I couldn’t even work yesterday because of dumsor,” – he added.

“So what’s the point if we’re still buying tomatoes at five cedis and garden eggs at ten cedis? Are those bought with dollars too?”

Awuku’s comments come amid growing public frustration over high living costs and erratic power supply, despite encouraging currency reports.
