VIDEO: Coronavirus: residents rush over food items donated by Nungua Warehouse

The Nungua Warehouse Company Limited (NWCL) has donated 500 bags of essential items to some vulnerable persons at Nungua and its environs to aid them during the lockdown caused by the deadly coronavirus (COVID-19).
The donation of items which included bags of rice, oil, sugar, canned fish, Gari, packs of bottled water and others formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibilities (CSR).
Although the bags were enough to support the people at the venue, most of them rushed over the items and refused to observe social distancing.
Due to their behaviour, the distributors could not share all the items at the same place and therefore had to leave to continue the donations at another calmer venue.
Speaking with a Lawyer of the NWCL, Jones Bortey Applerh, he advised all Ghanaians to adhere to precautionary measures, especially social distancing in order not to be infected.
According to him, the company as part of its CSR decided to support vulnerable people, especially the aged during a time of the coronavirus and also during Easter.
However, he noted that the youth rather rushed on the items instead of maintaning the social distancing, therefore the Company could not allow the people to go against the precautionary measures, hence leave to a calmer venue to continue.
“We had the intention of supporting the vulnerable, especially the aged but the youth rushed over the items and did not allow us to do it as planned. We had to leave to a different place to continue. If you did not get some of the food do not worry, it is better to adhere to the precautionary rules and stay safe than to gather yourselves plenty at a place that could lead to being infected,” he said.
Jones Bortey Applerh also called on other companies, individuals and non-governmental organisations to also support the needy in such difficult times.
While those who could not get some of the items were disappointed, those who benefited from the donations expressed over excitement after receiving their share.
One of the beneficiaries, Awuni Zakari who could not hold his happiness thanked the company for the benevolence and called on all others who are capable to emulate NWCL.
Meanwhile, one of those who could not get some of the items advised all donors, including the government to rather share the food at their various homes instead of binging it to open places for people to rush over it.
