Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has asked Ghanaian politicians to should take note of the recent events in Kenya, particularly as the nation gets ready for the December 7 Polls.

The Speaker urged politicians, especially members of Parliament, to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections, pointing out that the situation in Kenya is not all that dissimilar from Ghana’s.

In an effort to guarantee a peaceful election process, Mr. Bagbin said he has contacted important parties inluding the Chief Justice, traditional leaders, and chairs of the National Commission for Civic Education and the Electoral Commission. He also plans to speak with President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking to reporters in Kumasi, Bagbin emphasized the necessity of taking preventative action to protect Ghana’s democracy before the elections in 2024.

“People sometimes take so many things for granted including my colleagues in Parliament but we all can bear witness that what happened in Kenya is now in Tanzania it could be in Ghana and I am not saying it will be in Ghana.

“We are not different from our brothers and sisters in Kenya and so we have to take preemptive measures to prevent that from happening and so we must do all we can to make sure that the right person that Ghanaians want to lead the country, leads the country and so in this matter, I will do all I can so that nobody reads partisanship in whatever I do.”
