Chairman of the Association of Local Mine Contractors in Ahafo North, Alex Buampong (Alexiboam), has urged mining firms to employ local youth, stressing that it is the only sustainable way to curb illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
“When you know the risks, these young guys take to do illegal mining, it will shock you. But some of them are left with no option because they are unemployed. We must act now,” – he said.
He made this appeal at the official launch of the Association of Local Mine Contractors Ghana in Ahafo North, where industry players gathered to discuss ways to strengthen local participation in mining.

The Omanhene of Intotrosu, Nana Berima Kyereku III, also emphasized the need for responsible mining practices and collaboration between communities, government, and mining firms.
The new association aims to promote policies that support local mine contractors, create networking opportunities, and drive industry growth.
Stakeholders believe that by prioritizing employment for locals, the mining industry can help reduce the destruction of farmlands and water bodies caused by illegal mining.
