FDA’s ban on alcohol advertisement step in the right direction – NGO

Director for Vision for Alternative Development, La Brand Musa, has lauded the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ministry of Health for their directive to allow media houses to air alcoholic advertisements after 8pm.

Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ministry of Health has come up with a regulatory policy that allows media houses to advertise alcoholic beverages only after 8pm.

According to the FDA, these advertisements  will prevent  minors  from  purchasing alcoholic products being advertised.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka Am Drive, Director for Vision for Alternative Development, La Brand Musa stated that as an NGO geared towards protecting future generation against social vices, it will be proper for the FDA to extend the ban to 10pm.

He pleaded with the FDA to peg the alcoholic drinking age in Ghana at 21 and not 18 years.

However, President of the Ghana Drunkards Association, Moses Dry bone stated that the association to some extent identify with the FDA’s policy, adding that it would be more appropriate for the FDA to direct media houses to rather advertise alcoholic beverages during school hours where minors will be in school.

According to him, "kids of today" do not sleep before 8pm and such a directive will yield no positive results.
