Galamsey fight: Organised Labour suspends nationwide strike

Organised Labour has called off its planned statewide strike, which was set to commence today, October 10, 2024.

The decision was made following an emergency meeting yesterday when union leaders agreed to end the strike.

According to Organised Labour, the government has made significant progress, including intensifying the “Operational Halt” program, led by the Ghana Armed Forces, to combat illegal mining in forest reserves.

During a media briefing, Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), stated that Labour’s decision was intended to give the government time to implement the promised reforms.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to advocate for stronger actions against illegal mining,” he said.

In his communication to union members, Mr. Ansah noted that the President had instructed the Lands Minister to present a request to Parliament for the annulment of L.I. 2462.

He stated that this, together with the deployment of soldiers to aid in the fight and the creation of 14 courts for the trial of all apprehended illegal miners, demonstrated sufficient commitment from the government.

The planned strike had gained the support of several unions, to pressure the government to declare a state of emergency and enhance efforts to address the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
