A Retired Chief Inspector of the Ghana Police Service, Michael Asamoah has expressed worry over the lackadaisical attitude of police officers towards work.

He noticed how some police officers who are expected to be on guard seem unbothered while on duty.

He was reacting to the incident at James town where a policeman was shot through a robbery attack.

Some suspected robbers on three motorbikes attacked a Man-tran bullion van, used for the collection of daily sales from traders at Adedenkpo in James Town.

The robbers who are said to have fired indiscriminately, shot a policeman on escort duty and killed him, instantly.

A woman of about 30 years was also shot and killed while she was in her shop.

Speaking with Abena Dufie Asare Adjepong on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie, Rtd. Michael Asamoah urged the police to be very alert when they are on duty, explaining that they may be exposed to danger at anytime.

“Their attitude towards work should change. As a police officer, you know that you are prone to attack at anytime when sitting in a bullion van, you have to be alert and observant. They have to check their attitude towards work,” he said.

Rtd. Michael Asamoah suggested that the police officers should be given all the resources needed to make their work safer.

However, he noted lack of maintenance culture, saying there should be officers assigned and resourced so that periodically, they can maintain the vehicles and equipment given them.

“Every government gives the police resources, but the maintenance culture is what is the issue. The misuse of resources given to the police also counts. If they are given to the police, the authorities must ensure they do not misuse it.”

Rtd. Michael Asamoah urged the administration to sit up and give the junior police officers side arms and bullet proofs when they are going out on operation.
