Hooliganism impeding sponsorship in our local leagues- Gideon Fosu

Gideon Fosu, Vice President of Akosombo Kings Palace FC and Executive Council Member of the GFA, has expressed his displeasure with some factors that are hindering the sponsorship of Ghana football local leagues.

Mr. Gideon expressed much concern about hooliganism, which is ongoing in our local leagues, from the Ghana Premier League to the lower division leagues.

Speaking on the Legend Sports show on Atinka FM, the Exco member, hinted that hooliganism has made Ghana football lose its attraction for sponsorship. ‘You will easily find cooperative institutions or a company to invest in our leagues when it is attractive because the return will be good,’ he stressed.

Gideon Fosu commended Ghana’s Club Licensing Regulatory for their excellent work, but he added that it will be very difficult to be strict on their regulations because of the system Ghana is running. Club Licensing Regulation is responsible for certifying good infrastructure for a team to play league matches.

He pointed out that when we want to deal with hooliganism, they need to certify whether the club has a proper inner perimeter where officials and players can go without any fans getting close.

He stated that most Division One teams fail to meet these criteria, and he believes a review of this regulation is necessary to boost local football. He stated, “I believe we need to aggressively address this to make our league attractive.”

Gideon Fosu again emphasized that ‘it will be very difficult because most clubs don’t have the requisite funds to be able to build the standard stadiums we are talking about’.

He concluded with an appeal to the government for their support in developing our football, especially our local leagues.
