Improvement in quality of teachers unprecedented – GES Dep. Director-General

Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, Deputy Director-General at Ghana Education Service (GES), has revealed that the quality of teachers in recent times is unmatched.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Atinka AM Drive host, Nana Fianko on Tuesday, July 15, 2024, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh explained that in terms of professional competence, pre-service training, and the resources available to them, it is difficult to argue that past teachers are better than the current ones.

“Since 2020, graduates from colleges of education earn degree instead of diploma as it used to be. Additionally, teachers in active service with diplomas who wanted to upgrade their qualifications now have to study for three or four years.”

“From 2017, 2018 onwards, considering the professional competence, pre-service training, and available resources, it is hard to claim that teachers in the past are better than today’s teachers,” Dr. Tandoh stated.

Commenting on the Free SHS policy ownership debate, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh questioned the basis on which former President John Dramani Mahama claims ownership of the policy after previously stating that Ghana could not introduce Free SHS based on the “whimsical promises of a desperate politician.”

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2020 for what he described as the poor implementation of the Free SHS policy.

The former President said the poor implementation of the policy had caused confusion in the education sector and stress for parents and their children.

However, Mr. Mahama affirmed his commitment to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy and promised to improve it if re-elected as president in the upcoming elections.

“The Free SHS policy has come to stay, and I am committed to improving it,” he said while addressing the press in Accra on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
