Hundreds of residents in Kubekro No.2, Apolonia and Katamanso, all communities in the Kpone Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region, were displaced by floods caused by excessive water spillage from an irrigation dam in the district.
Over a million Ghana cedis worth of properties were also destroyed in last night’s incident.
Wednesday’s flooding which was experienced by residents in Katamanso, Kuberkro No2, Atta Deka and Apolonia, all communities in the Kpone Katamanso District, was reportedly caused by an overflow of water from the Apolonia irrigation dam.
Report suggest Monday’s rains, coupled with that of Wedesday’s heavy downpour in Apolonia, had contributed to the irrigation dam overflowing it banks.
Over a million Ghana cedis worth of properties were destroyed by the flood, leaving some hundreds of residents homeless.
Residential and commercial properties were not spared by the flood, with the affected persons not being able to salvage any of their properties.
Madam Esther Appiah, whose grandchildren are currently receiving treatment at the Tema general Hospital, after sustaining injuries in the flood, also shared her story to Atinkanews.
Members of a local church and a social center, which were the hardest hit by the floods, also shared damages caused to their properties.
Some portions of the Atta Deka- Apolonia road and that of the downtown police station, were not spared by the flood.
No casualty has since been recorded, despite few isolated cases of injuries sustained by persons attempting to salvage their properties.
