Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged a nonpartisan approach to addressing the disappearance of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at the port, emphasizing that the issue is systemic and requires urgent reforms.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Minority Leader stated that customs officers involved in the disappearance of these containers should be arrested, and the opposition is willing to support the government in ensuring accountability.
“It is true that when these containers arrive, there is some contrivance with some customs officials, and they sell them. Instead of addressing the root cause, we turn it into an NPP-NDC debate. This is a system failure, and we must tackle it together,” – he stressed.
The issue of the missing ECG containers has sparked public concern after reports emerged that crucial electrical cables meant for the national power grid had vanished at the port under questionable circumstances.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin, who previously chaired the ECG Board, revealed that procurement irregularities have long plagued the company, with payments often made before goods are even verified. He urged the energy minister to take decisive action to end the trend of corruption and inefficiency.
“If we all want to approach this issue through party lenses, the cycle will continue for years. But if we take a bold, bipartisan stance, we can root out the rot,” – he emphasized.
His call for action adds to growing pressure on the government to investigate and address the ECG container scandal, which has raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability in public procurement.
