In a significant shake-up within Ghana’s security sector, President John Dramani Mahama has relieved Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare of his duties as Inspector General of Police (IGP) and appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as his successor.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new IGP is set for Friday, March 14.

While an official reason for Dr. Akuffo-Dampare’s removal has not been disclosed, sources indicate that the decision is part of ongoing security sector reforms aimed at restructuring the Ghana Police Service.

Dr. Akuffo-Dampare, who assumed office in 2021, led key policing reforms, including enhanced community engagement and internal discipline measures. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize law enforcement and improve public trust in the police.
With COP Yohuno now at the helm, the focus will be on his vision for Ghana’s policing strategy and how he intends to build upon—or possibly rethink—his predecessor’s reforms.
