Mfantseman murder: Approach to protect MPs wrong – Security expert

Security expert, Adib Sani, says government’s decision to deploy over 200 security guards to protect Members of Parliament is wrong.

The security expert says the approach to tackling the security of Ghana’s Members of Parliament shows the country lacks an understanding of the issues at stake.

This statement follows the deployment of over 200 police officers to protect Members of Parliament (MPs), Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has said.

The development is as a result of the gruesome murder of the member of Parliament for  Mfantseman Constituency, Ekow Quansah Hayford.

Ekow Quansah Hayford was shot by suspected contract killers when he was returning from a campaign rally at Nkusukum Mankessim on the Abeadze Duadze road on Friday at 1 am.

“So we have proposed that, between now and the end of the year, we are going to provide an additional 200 police personnel to be part of the parliamentary protection unit. We are making this arrangement to ensure that the unit attains the status of divisional police command to take care of the Members of Parliament as bodyguards. Ideally to get to where we want to get to means that, subsequently, we should have 800 police added so that each MP will also have security at home in the day and night. Due to the retooling of the security agencies by President [Nana Addo Dankwa] Akufo-Addo, the country has more security agencies and security personnel available,” Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery said on the floor of Parliament.

Reacting to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, Security expert, Adib Sani explained that government is concentrating on the deployment of the police, ignoring the wider and serious issue of insecurity facing the country.

According to Adib Saani, the current insecurity issue is bigger than MPs and Parliament and that it is a wider and broader issue that has been in existence since 2017.

“ This is a serious issue that requires a holistic and multi-dimensional approach, but unfortunately we believe MP’s are the only ones at risk. But we are all at risk due to the nature of our jobs. The Journalist, the security expert etc. are all at risks,” he added.
