It has become abundantly clear that Ghana is a nation of talkers and attention-seekers.
Everywhere you turn, there seems to be someone eager to jump on any issue just to announce their presence and implicitly further their career.
Unfortunately, the media, ever the enabler, has played a significant role in this phenomenon by turning just about anyone into an expert and granting them interviews that sometimes pollute the airwaves with their uninformed or sometimes skewed opinions.
Self-made financial analysts, security analysts, and political analysts are a peswa a dozen in Ghana and it’s truly a marvel to witness the sheer audacity of these self-appointed experts who seem to have all the answers without any of the credentials to back them up.
I read somewhere that a security analyst, Mr Anthony Acquaye has been urging the Ghana Police Service to closely monitor Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s activities and this call to action stems from the Minister’s strong assertion that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not transfer power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, it is worth noting that Dr. Acheampong has not stated anywhere that his party will refuse to hand over power in the event of losing the 2024 elections.
While security analysts and civil Society Organisations need to be vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety and security of the nation, it is equally crucial for them to be circumspect and provide clear and specific details when making such calls.
For instance, the role of a security analyst is one that demands a high level of integrity, objectivity, and professionalism.
These individuals are expected to analyse complex security situations, provide expert insights, and offer unbiased assessments based on evidence and facts. In this case, Mr Acquaye’s insistence on the need to monitor Dr Acheampong’s activities without outlining the basis for such monitoring leaves much to be desired.
This whole call in itself is much ado about nothing, because in the realm of politics, such bold statements, political grandstanding and empty threats often find their way into the public discourse.
Rather than offering a thorough analysis of Dr. Acheampong’s speech and highlighting any perceived threats, it appears that the analyst’s primary aim was to define what he considers a definitive stance. It is evident that a deeper understanding of Dr. Acheampong’s position was not diligently pursued, and a critical examination of the context may have been lacking.
One more thing I find absurd and disappointing is how someone who claims to be a security analyst disregards the available evidence and pushes a false narrative for political gain. In the case of the Ayawaso West Wuogon disturbances which he conveniently cites to make his case, evidence clearly indicates that Dr Bryan Acheampong was not involved in the disturbances and no adverse findings were made against him. Yet, this analyst has chosen to ignore these facts and align himself with a particular political agenda, sacrificing his credibility and professionalism in the process.
Well! In all these, I have been asking myself why anyone would suggest that Bryan Acheampong seeks to destabilise the nation. In fact, such claims are not only absurd but also lack any logical foundation when considering the facts about his character and accomplishments.
Bryan Acheampong’s extensive investments across the country and in various sectors of the economy speak volumes about his commitment to economic growth and development. It is counterintuitive to believe that someone with such a vested interest in the nation’s prosperity would actively work to undermine it.
Furthermore, his high political ambitions suggests a desire to lead and make a positive impact on the country. It is illogical to assume that someone aspiring to higher office would want to see the very nation they seek to govern in turmoil.
As an academic, Bryan Acheampong is likely to possess the critical thinking skills and knowledge necessary to understand the implications of destabilising actions on a nation. It is unreasonable to think that an educated individual would engage in activities that could harm the country. While specific details about his investments may not be publicly known, the existence of a successful project like Rock City Hotels serves as a prove to his dedication to the country’s development and progress.
Although I agree that his platform speeches may stir controversy and provoke strong reactions, it is important to see beyond the surface and recognise the underlying motivations behind Bryan Acheampong’s tough talk.
Oseey Ghana! – a country where expertise is just a matter of talking a big game and where mediocrity is celebrated as brilliance.
