National Peace Council, WANEP condemn attack on EC office at Damongo

The National Peace Council and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) denounced the vandalism that occurred in Damongo, Savannah Region.

Angry party supporters set fire to the Damongo Municipal Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters because the election results were delayed.

This resulted in substantial damage to the office and its belongings. According to eyewitnesses, the youngsters, angry with the protracted wait for election results, attacked the EC building and set it on fire. The suspects have been arrested.

In a release, the National Peace Council and WANEP stated, “The National Peace Council (NPC), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and other partners in the Election Situation Room are aware of reports that the Electoral Commission (EC) office and collation centre in Damango, Savannah Region, has been vandalised and set ablaze.”

It urged political supporters to leave the collation centers and allow their accredited representatives to witness the process.a

“It is essential that political supporters withdraw from the collation centres and allow their accredited agents to observe the collation process. The NPC calls on party leaders to make a public call on their supporters to withdraw from collation centres.

“The NPC calls on all sides to allow Electoral Commission personnel to carry out their duties with professionalism and integrity in order to deliver a free, fair and transparent election.”
