Aid to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and a Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has argued that history and electoral data make the 2024 Presidential Candiate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the most formidable candidate to lead the NPP into the next general elections.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 presidential bid, in which he secured about 42% of the national vote under challenging conditions, puts him in pole position for future elections.
In a write up posted on his facebook wall, Mr. Aboagye said Ghana’s political landscape consistently rewards candidates who return after previous contests, citing the electoral journeys of former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“Elections in Ghana favour consistent and repeated candidates, that’s fact and not assumptions. In 2012, then-candidate Akufo-Addo, after contesting twice, won zero constituencies in six out of the sixteen regions. Similarly, President Kufuor won no constituencies in eight out of sixteen regions in 1996. Yet, both were retained by the party and eventually won power,” he stated.
“Every indication points to the fact that Dr. Bawumia losing 2024 also reinforces him and makes him the most likely person to win the next elections, especially when running against a completely new candidate. This is supported by data and no assumptions,” he stressed.
He further described Dr. Bawumia as “prepared, formidable, and winnable,” arguing that the Vice President’s vision for the party and the country sets him apart from other potential aspirants.
“The fact is, when Dr. Bawumia was presented in 2024, he garnered close to 42% of the votes. What we don’t know is how many votes other aspirants could gather if given the opportunity. It is risky to gamble on someone who only claims he can deliver 50%, while ignoring a candidate who has proven his ability to mobilize support and only needs an additional 9% to win,” he said.
He urged the party to consolidate the support base built in 2024 while working strategically to bridge the remaining gap.
“The numbers favour Dr. Bawumia. The electoral history favours Dr. Bawumia. The most strategic thing to do is to stick with him, consolidate the 41% and tweak strategies to attract the extra 9%,” he advised.
