Obuasi: All trapped miners exit pit, 86 in police custody

Obuasi

All illegal miners who were trapped in a pit under the AngloGold Ashanti concession at Aweam in Obuasi have exited with about 90 of them arrested and being processed for court.

About 300 illegal miners were trapped in a pit under AngloGold Ashanti concession about a week ago.

The miners accused AngloGold Ashanti of intentionally covering the pit to kill them.

But in response, AngloGold Ashanti debunked allegations by the illegal miners that it covered the mining pit to kill galamseyers.

In a statement to debunk the allegation, AngloGold Ashanti said unauthorized persons underground were able to exit on foot, via an existing ramp, through the main access of the mining area.

“No person underground has been confined in any way and the main exit ramp from the mine remains open. Obuasi Gold Mine’s management team has notified the relevant authorities and public security services and is working closely with them,” it stated.

The AngloGold Ashanti which covered the illegal route brought on board security persons to arrest the illegal miners for trespassing and some of them who came out through the main exit of the AngloGold Ashanti concession escaped.

However, most of the miners did not want to come out through the main exit for fear of being arrested.

Unfortunately, they had to choose being stuck in the pit or being arrested and they had no option than to come out through the main exit of the mining area.

For those who were unlucky, they were grabbed and are currently in police custody.

As of Thursday, June 1, 2023, all the illegal miners trapped in the pit had exited.

However, the authorities have also hinted that new miners are sneaking into the mining site despite the tension and security in the town.
