Weakening Institutions Dents Ghana’s Image More Than CJ Suspension – Nana Yaw Sarpong

CJ Suspension

Nana Yaw Sarpong, Political Assistant to independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen, has defended President John Mahama’s handling of the petition against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, stating that the President acted in line with the Constitution and should not be faulted for forwarding the petition.

Speaking on Bullet TV’s Morning Target hosted by Nana Kweku Aduah, Sarpong argued that the President should not have given a copy of the petition to the Chief Justice at the early stage, stressing that such a step was premature.

“I am of the view that the Chief Justice was not even supposed to be given a copy of the petition until after the committee had been formed. That’s what the Constitution says. The President is just a conduit – a recipient of the petition. He doesn’t determine whether to act on it or not,” he said.

According to him, the President’s role under Article 146 of the Constitution is limited to forming a committee, in consultation with the Council of State, once a petition is received. The responsibility of determining whether a prima facie case exists lies solely with that committee.

CJ Suspension

Sarpong dismissed claims that the suspension of the Chief Justice dents Ghana’s image, questioning why similar concerns weren’t raised in previous cases involving judicial manipulation.

“Is the Chief Justice the only person whose removal could affect the image of the country? What about instances where people were jailed despite being granted bail? Or when judges were transferred immediately after sensitive rulings? Those incidents also damaged the judiciary’s credibility,”- he stated.

He cited the example of Gregory Afoko, who he claimed was unjustly detained for years after being granted bail, as well as politically sensitive court cases which were delayed or fast-tracked based on timing and political convenience.

Sarpong called out lawyers and critics who have raised alarm over the CJ’s suspension, describing some of their arguments as politically motivated rather than grounded in the Constitution.

“You can’t just speak law. Back your claims with authority. Some people are interpreting Article 146 as if the President has breached the law, but a plain reading shows he acted within his mandate,” – he argued.

He further emphasized that Article 146(6) clearly outlines the President’s responsibility to appoint a five-member committee – including two Supreme Court Justices and three non-politically affiliated individuals – to probe the petition. “That is what has been done. So where is the breach?” – he asked.

Nana Yaw Sarpong concluded by reiterating that while he is not a lawyer, the constitutional process appears to have been followed correctly. He called on Ghanaians to read the Constitution for themselves and not allow partisan commentary to shape public opinion.

The suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo has sparked national debate, with legal experts, civil society, and religious groups divided over the legality and implications of President Mahama’s decision.

Otumfuo’s Mediation in Bawku Conflict is a Waste of Time – Citizen Eye Ghana President

Citizen Eye Ghana

Founder and President of Citizen Eye Ghana (CITEG), Alex Kwaku Tetteh, has questioned the relevance of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s continued mediation efforts in the protracted Bawku conflict, describing it as “a waste of time.”

Speaking on Oman Mu Nsem on Atinka TV over the weekend with host Nana Owoahene Achiampong, Mr. Tetteh expressed disappointment that influential local leaders in Bawku and its environs have failed to speak the truth and take decisive steps to end the violence in the area.

“There are respected leaders in Bawku who know the truth but have refused to act on it. Instead, we are depending on Otumfuo, whose efforts may eventually be in vain if the truth is not upheld by those directly involved,” – he said.

Tetteh cautioned that the Asantehene risks losing the reverence and dignity he commands if he is unable to achieve tangible results in restoring peace to Bawku.

“The Nayiri himself knows what must be done. He should speak up. We cannot keep dragging Otumfuo into this when those at the heart of the conflict remain silent,” – he added.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who was initially appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2024 to lead mediation efforts, is set to resume peace talks from 28 April to 1 May 2025 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The Bawku conflict, which has spanned decades, continues to affect lives and development in the Upper East Region. While Otumfuo’s involvement has been widely welcomed as a neutral and respected force, the comments by CITEG’s president reflect growing frustrations among sections of the public over the lack of progress.

Ghana Needs 1,000MW of Solar Energy to End Dumsor – Expert Urges Gov’t Action

Ghana must urgently integrate at least 1,000 megawatts (MW) of solar energy into the national grid to permanently resolve the ongoing power outages, popularly known as Dumsor, according to civil engineer and energy expert, Captain Neil Armstrong.

Speaking on Oman Mu Nsem on Atinka TV hosted by Nana Owoahene Acheampong, Captain Armstrong lamented Ghana’s over-reliance on hydroelectric power and described the country’s solar contribution to the energy mix as alarmingly low — estimated at just 0.5%.

“Our population is now around 34.45 million, yet we are still dependent on a national grid that is not expanding fast enough. If the government is serious about solving Dumsor, it must commit to adding at least 1,000MW of solar power to the grid,”- he said.

He added that many qualified Ghanaian engineers are ready and willing to contribute to solving the energy crisis but are often sidelined in national policy discussions.

“We have top engineers in Ghana, but we are not using them to benefit this country. Instead, they’re being used in places like Togo, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso,” – he stressed.

Armstrong noted that Burkina Faso, under its current interim leadership, has managed to produce over 1,500MW of solar energy in just a short time, and Ghana can follow suit if there is strong political will.

According to him, solar energy is cheaper to maintain than other sources of power and can drastically reduce the high electricity tariffs Ghanaians currently endure.

“The reason consumers are paying high tariffs is because we’re using expensive single-cycle power plants instead of the more efficient combined-cycle systems,” – he explained.

He also criticized Ghana’s lack of a long-term energy development plan. “After 68 years of independence, we still don’t have even a 10-year national energy plan. That’s a serious oversight,” he warned.

Captain Armstrong urged the government to engage professional engineers and technocrats in finding lasting solutions to the energy problem.

“If the government can prioritize and invest in solar power, Ghana will not experience energy crises again. It’s time for our leaders to put Ghana and Ghanaians first,” he concluded.

Christian Mothers Association Condemns Suspension of Chief Justice

Screenshot

The Christian Mothers Association of Ghana has strongly condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama, describing the action as a dangerous precedent that threatens the core of Ghana’s democratic foundation.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Association expressed deep concern over what they see as an unjust move that could erode public confidence in the judicial system.

“This action sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the very foundation of our democracy, akin to the biblical warning in Proverbs 29:2, ‘When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan,’” the statement read.

The Association called on Ghanaians and the international community to rise in collective opposition to the President’s decision, which they believe compromises the integrity of Ghana’s justice system.

“We urge all right-thinking Ghanaians and the international community to join us in denouncing this unjust decision. It is crucial that we collectively hold our leaders accountable,” the group stated, invoking the African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” to emphasize the need for unity in defending democratic values.

The Christian Mothers Association also appealed directly to President Mahama to reconsider his action and restore confidence in the judiciary.

“We call upon President John Mahama to reconsider this decision and to restore faith in our judicial system. Let us remember that true leadership is rooted in integrity and respect for the rule of law,” the statement concluded.

President Mahama, earlier this week, suspended the Chief Justice after a prima facie case was established following three petitions submitted against her.

A five-member committee, including two Supreme Court Justices, has been formed to probe the allegations in accordance with Article 146 of the Constitution.

The suspension has generated significant public debate, drawing mixed reactions from civil society, legal professionals, and religious groups across the country.
