NPP Refers Owusu Bempah to Disciplinary Committee Over Social Media Comments

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred its Deputy Director of Communications, Mr. Ernest Owusu Bempah, to the party’s National Disciplinary Committee for alleged misconduct on social media.

In an official statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the decision follows several comments made by Mr. Bempah on social media which are believed to contravene recent directives issued to all party members.

The statement instructed all members of the party to refrain from making public statements that could cause disaffection or division within the party, especially in the media.

Despite this, Mr. Bempah is alleged to have made remarks on social media platforms that appear to defy the party’s internal communication and disciplinary guidelines.

Mr. Bempah will now face the party’s Disciplinary Committee for further investigations and appropriate action.

The NPP has reiterated its commitment to upholding internal discipline as it works to maintain unity and focus ahead of its post-election engagements.

Two Arrested Over Akom Murder and Robbery of Soldiers

The Boamang Police Command has arrested two suspects linked to the gruesome murder of 26-year-old Foster Afrifa, who was stabbed to death on April 21, 2024, following a brief misunderstanding at Akom.

The suspects, identified as Solomon Owusu, alias “Company Hero,” and Sumaila Yahaya, alias “Royal,” were earlier declared wanted after their names were mentioned by a third suspect, Kassim Ashiru, who was initially arrested and confessed to the crime.

According to police sources, the two were later rearrested at the Kodie Police Station, where they had been detained for a separate crime. The Boamang Police, in collaboration with their Kodie counterparts, successfully transferred the suspects to assist in the ongoing murder investigation.

In a shocking twist, the two suspects are also believed to have been involved in a recent robbery incident in which some military officers were attacked and a mobile phone stolen.

Police are continuing their investigations to build a solid case, with plans to arraign the suspects immediately after the holiday break. Photographs of the suspects have been secured, and authorities say updates will be provided in due course.

In an interview with Atinka News, Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Obed Kwarteng, expressed concern over the increasing crime rate and commended the police for the swift action taken.

The community remains on high alert as investigations continue.

Kasoa MCE Nominee Sworn In Amid Chaos and Legal Threats

The confirmation of Mr. Seth Sabah Serwornoo-Banini as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East has been marred by chaos, allegations of manipulation, and threats of legal action by some aggrieved Assembly Members.

Drama unfolded during the second round of voting after Mr. Serwornoo-Banini failed to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority in the first round, polling 10 ‘Yes’ votes and 9 ‘No’ votes. The process became controversial when ballot papers were allegedly snatched and torn in full view of the police, with the media barred from observing the proceedings.

In the end, the nominee managed to secure 11 ‘Yes’ votes and 4 ‘No’ votes in the second round—enough to earn him confirmation, but the legitimacy of the process is now being questioned.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved members, Hon. Shadrack Boakye Yiadom, Assembly Member for the American Town Electoral Area, accused the authorities of using “mafia tactics” and vowed to seek legal redress. “We will go to court,” he declared.

Adding to the tension, a judge who was scheduled to swear in the MCE reportedly walked out of the hall before the final count, stating, “Our hands are clean.”

Despite the controversy, Mr. Serwornoo-Banini was eventually sworn in and, in his acceptance speech, pledged to drive the municipality’s development agenda in line with the President’s vision.

Also present at the ceremony was the Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, Prof. Richard Asiedu, who assured that the party will provide full support to the new MCE to ensure progress in the area.

The events have sparked concern among residents and political observers, with many calling for transparency and fairness in local governance processes.

Government Revokes License of Akonta Mining Over Criminal Activities in Tano Nimri Forest

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP, has issued a directive to the Minerals Commission to immediately revoke the license of Ghanaian mining firm Akonta Mining for engaging in acts that not only flout the country’s mining regulations but are also criminal.

Speaking at an emergency press conference on Monday, April 21, 2025, Hon. Armah-Buah described Akonta Mining as a ‘criminal syndicate’ that has allegedly sold portions of the Tano Nimri Forest to illegal miners, contrary to the country’s mining laws.

“I have authorized the Minerals Commission to take steps to revoke the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd with immediate effect,” he said.

The Minister gave a heart-wrenching and alarming breakdown of how personnel of the Forestry Commission connived with officials of Akonta Mining to undertake the supposedly criminal enterprise.

“We gathered a team of investigators to go undercover to make enquiries about the details of this operation. Our undercover team uncovered a well-oiled machinery of destruction: One Mr. Ayisi (a representative of Akonta Mining) is the liaison on these dealings – he serves as the gatekeeper, negotiating fees and granting illegal access.

“The concessions are then subleased to individuals like one ‘Mr. Henry’ and another individual identified as ‘Shark’ who are to oversee the devastation of the Aboi Forest Reserve and the Tano River.

“As part of the agreement between Akonta Mining and the illegal miners, weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold are to be paid to the company, lining the pockets of Akonta’s collaborators,” he recounted.

Honorable Armah-Kofi Buah announced further actions on the disheartening development, noting that the officials of the Forestry Commission behind the illegal actions of Akonta have been interdicted pending investigations.

The Attorney-General has also been served with notice of the criminal conduct of the persons involved for prosecution and further action.

“I have directed that forestry officials connected to these illegalities be immediately interdicted pending further investigations and prosecution. The security agencies have been notified to investigate security officers who have had dealings with Akonta Mining in this particular Forest Reserve.

“The Attorney-General has also since been briefed and has taken over the investigations for further action. Akonta Mining does not have a lease to mine in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, and their mining activities in the forest are illegal and criminal. And that, the Mahama government will stop at nothing to bring the company to book,” he said.

Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah reiterated the government’s commitment to dealing with the illegal mining menace, warning that the government will deal decisively with anyone found to have flouted the country’s mining laws.

Volta Police Intercept Ammunition on Accra-Benin Bound Bus

The Ghana Police Service has intercepted a large consignment of ammunition being transported on a commercial bus from Accra to Benin.

The incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025, at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police barrier.

During a routine search, officers discovered 60 cartons of AAA cartridges, amounting to 15,000 rounds, and 72 cartons of BB cartridges, totaling 18,000 rounds.

The ammunition was concealed in sacks and hidden beneath passengers’ luggage on a Hyundai bus with registration number GR 8246-Q.

The driver, 45-year-old Abasou Fousseni, and his co-driver, 38-year-old Salisu Jalilu, were immediately arrested for questioning.

Both men initially denied knowledge of the ammunition, but police investigations revealed that the co-driver was responsible for loading the illicit cargo.

While the driver was later granted bail to continue transporting the passengers to their destination, the co-driver remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned before court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

In a press release, the Volta Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, DSP Felix Danku, assured the public of the Service’s unwavering commitment to fighting transnational crimes and safeguarding peace and security in the sub-region.
