Hurricane Florence: Life-threatening storm starts to lash Carolinas

Tens of thousands of homes are without power and sea water is sloshing through coastal streets as Hurricane Florence begins lashing the US East Coast.

The hurricane is moving towards land with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90mph (150 km/h).

It lost power as it approached North and South Carolina, but officials warn it could still kill "a lot of people" with risks of "catastrophic" flooding.

Evacuation orders are in place for more than a million people.

The governor of North Carolina, where Florence is expected to make landfall at noon local time on Friday, said surviving the storm would be a test of "endurance, teamwork, common sense, and patience".

"The first bands of the storm are upon us but we have days more to go," Roy Cooper said.

National Weather Service forecaster Brandon Locklear said North Carolina is likely to see eight months' worth of rain in two to three days.

Conditions deteriorated throughout Thursday. Some areas of North Carolina saw almost a foot of rain just a few hours, and footage showed sea levels begin to surge in land.

At 23:00 local time (03:00 GMT) the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said wind speeds had slightly lowered, making it a category one hurricane.

The NHC says that despite the gradual lowering in wind strength, the storm remains extremely dangerous because of the high volume of rainfall and storm surges predicted.

"Inland flooding kills a lot of people, unfortunately, and that's what we're about to see," said Brock Long, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema).

He said that people living near rivers, streams and lowland areas in the region were most at risk.

The latest weather predictions show the storm slowing to a near standstill as it pummels the coast with "copious amounts of rain" from Thursday night to Saturday.

Wind speeds are only expected to weaken on Saturday as the storm moves slowly across land.

Economy On Right Track – BoG

The Bank of Ghana has assured the public the fundamentals of the economy are sound and strong, despite recent depreciation of the Cedi.

Speaking at “The Cedi Forum” to discuss the depreciation of the local currency, the head of Financial Markets and Treasury Dr Stephen Opata pointed out that the Central Bank has firm grips over the issues.

He said the depreciation of the Cedi is temporary, promising that measures such as “adequate reserves” have been put in place to address the shocks. “We’re providing liquidity to the banking systems to meet the shocks,” Opata stated on Thursday, 13 September 2018.

He added: “We’re trying to ensure that there is a lot of liquidity in the banking system. The shocks will come, but the BoG will always be there to manage it. The important thing is to make the economy attractive.”

“According to our analysis this currency is well aligned. We’re not too strong and not too weak. We’ve had a good year and based on the fundamentals, we were expecting to have a better year until recently,” Opata asserted.

Mr. Opata, who is also in charge of Treasury at the Central Bank, observed that “there has been significant turnaround in the fundamentals of the Cedi starting from 2017 to 2018.”

Admitting that “there has been some depreciation” in the last couple of weeks, Mr. Opata argued “it is not the worst we’ve seen.”

“The BoG is trying to live to expectation of Ghanaians in terms of achieving stability. We should not worry. We’re on the right track,” Mr. Opata assured.

No cause for concern over cedi depreciation – IFS Fellow

A Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), Dr Said Boakye, has expressed confidence in the managers of the economy, allaying fears the recent depreciation of the local currency will lead to economic meltdown.

The Ghana cedi in recent times has depreciated marginally against major international currencies, especially the US dollar causing fears within the business community.

However, Dr Boakye submitted the shocks are normal, urging the general public to have confidence in the Central Bank to manage the situation in no time.

“There is no cause for alarm,” the IFS fellow assured at a public dialogue on the local currency dubbed: “The Cedi Forum” on Thursday, September 13, 2018.

He added: “We can’t talk about a problem without talking about the integrity of it. From the beginning of the year, the cedi has depreciated by just about 6.5%.”

In his view, this is far below the average depreciation of the cedi which stands at 11% for the periods spanning 1993 to date.

According to Dr Boakye, the local currency is doing far better than critics of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government are portraying, describing assertions on the depreciation as “noise.”

“The Cedi is not as weak as we think, so I don’t think that all the hullabaloo is necessary. I don’t think all the noise is necessary,” Dr Boakye stressed.

“The current discussion on Cedi depreciation is premature. The Cedi is performing averagely well,” the economist, who has been an ardent critic of the Akufo-Addo government stated.

Dr Boakye was of the view that the Cedi depreciation is deliberate on the part of the Bank of Ghana to fall “in line with the IMF [International Monetary Fund) programme.” This opinion was however challenged by Mr Stephen Opata from the bank of Ghana.

“In the short term, the cedi depreciation is a deliberate policy from the Bank of Ghana… The solution is clear, but it won't be simple,” the IFS Senior Research Fellow emphasised.

Headmistress charges GHC500 as admission fees at tuition-free basic school

Information reaching Atinka News indicates that authorities of Awudome One Basic School in the Okaikoi South constituency in the Greater Accra Region, are brazenly fleecing parents.

The headmistress of the government school, which is supposed to be free, is charging each parent GHC500 as admission fees for new entrants (JHS one students.

The headmistress of the school, Madam Bertha Agbudzor, declined to speak to the news team when we visited the school to seek her side of the story.

However, 10 parents who spoke to the news team said they were victims of the headmistress’ extortion.

They expressed shock at the development because they are aware that all government basic schools virtually pay nothing as tuition or administration fees.

According to them, attempts to seek clarification from madam Agbudzor have been unsuccessful because she is not ready to meet them.

They accused the headmistress of exhibiting some arrogant behaviors and needlessly repeating innocent students.

“I don’t understand that headmistress.. she is trying to repeat my daughter who  should be promoted to  JHS 3. She claims that my daughter doesn’t respect even though she had good grades. All efforts to talk to the headmistress have yielded no positive results,” one angry parent told Atinka News.

Another parent in a telephone interview with Atinka News said he was charged “GHC150 as levy, GHC30  for chairs, GHC245 for exercise and notebooks and GHC215 for textbooks only”.

The Deputy PRO for the Ghana Education Service, Isaac Asiedu Osei, said his outfit would investigate the allegations to ascertain the truth.

Boxer Emmanuel Tagoe's 14-year-old son NOT his child-DNA Test Reveals

Former IBO Lightweight Champion, Emmanuel Tagoe aka Gameboy says he is scandalized after DNA results proved that a son he had been fathering for 14 years is NOT his.

The Ghanaian boxer was dragged to an Accra Circuit Court by one Ms Diana Otoo, mother of the child, citing neglect of paternal duties.

The 29-year-old claims he had always felt suspicious a conspiracy by the family of the woman who, he says plotted to siphon monies from him.

Tagoe insisted he had always paid GH¢500 as monthly stipend for the upkeep of his supposed son but the family insisted he pays more.

Speaking to Saddick Adams Obama on Atinka TV's Sports Court show, Tagoe said the lady's family had taken him through hell, and only wanted to damage his reputation through blackmail.

"These people have really made me suffer. If not for my mum, I would have done this DNA test long ago but anytime I mentioned, she insisted I accept the child".

"I was paying GH¢500 a month but they could come out anytime and take money that the child was sick. Already, I was taking care of the child but I was shocked when they started demanding more money".

"They even demanded that I send the child to the same school where Asamoah Gyan's children were schooling but I didn't have that kind of money".

In July 2018, the family of Ms Otoo contacted Atinka FM's Sports Court show with documents from DOVVSU and an Accra Court indicating that Tagoe was supposed to pay them an amount of money but has refused.

Tagoe however decided to go for a DNA test, the result of which proved he was not the father.

"I was very sure that this boy was not mine but my mum had gagged me. We were young when I was playing 'Pilolo' with the girl. We were just standing and I had sex with her. I didn't even ejaculate but her family came home later to say the girl is pregnant for me".

The court asked me if I can sue them for damages but I have left everything to God. Everything I gave to the child, I won't take it back. He deserves it, not the mother", He said.

Full speech: Akufo Addo’s Tribute to Kofi Annan

Charming, cosmopolitan, consensus-builder, elegant, eloquent, gentle-mannered, modest, polyglot, proud African, peacemaker, quintessential diplomat, these words are still inadequate to capture the fullness of the personality of Kofi Annan, one of the truly iconic figures of modern times.

Even though he was my senior, we were good friends for most of my adult life. His father, H.R Annan, was one of the stalwarts of the Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition, serving as the Ashanti Regional Minister under Prime Minister Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia’s Progress Party Government of the 2nd Republic. Although he never openly acknowledged, in my presence, his attachment to the tradition, his advocacy of human rights, respect for the rule of law and the principle of democratic accountability was the very essence of that tradition.

Highly admired Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan was the first from sub-Saharan Africa to occupy this exalted office, which made him the world’s top diplomat. He brought considerable renown to our country by this position and by his conduct and comportment in the global arena. Indeed, the outpouring of tributes from the world over is an accurate measure of the man, a man who gave his life to making peace where there was conflict, to defending the voiceless who were powerless, to promoting virtue where there was evil.

Despite the unjustified attacks on him, trying to fix him with responsibility for the genocides in Rwanda and Srebrenica, when he was Head of UN Peace Operations, he never lost his moral compass, as he showed, when he stood up to the might of the United States of America, when she was embarking on her ill-fated intervention in Iraq. Kofi Annan’s epic, but unavailing effort to establish the supremacy of international law over the actions of even the world’s greatest power, won him the admiration of all right-thinking persons. He has been vindicated by history.

I recollect with fondness, that eventful day of Friday, 11th August 2006, when, as Foreign Minister, at the time Ghana occupied one of the non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council, I chaired the meeting of the Council which took the decision that halted Israel’s incursions into Lebanon by voting Security Council Resolution 1701. Seated to my immediate right, when that vote was taken, was my compatriot, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan.  What a proud day it was for me and for Ghana.

Kofi Annan was an ardent believer in the capacity of the Ghanaian and African to chart his or her own course onto the path of progress and prosperity. He found the vision of a Ghana Beyond Aid, indeed of an Africa Beyond Aid, very appealing. Undoubtedly, he excelled in the various undertakings of his life, leaving in his trail most pleasant memories. His was a life well-lived.

He gave me sensitive, deeply appreciated advice when I became President of the Republic. The last time I saw him was when he came to my office, at Jubilee House, on Friday, 10th March, to inform me, much to my discomfiture, that he could no longer continue to serve as Chancellor of Ghana’s premier university, the University of Ghana, Legon, since he had served the two-terms permitted by the statutes of the University. I bemoaned my ill-luck, even though, as life would have it, the University has found in Mary Chinery-Hesse, his old and trusted friend, a worthy successor.

A devout Christian, an outstanding Ghanaian, who served his country, Africa and humanity with dignity and humility, has left us to join his Maker. Ghana, Africa and the world have suffered greatly from his passing.

I am wholly humbled by the opportunity given to me, by the Grace of God and the generosity of the Ghanaian people, to decree, as President of the Republic, most fittingly, a state funeral in his honour.

He had strong, loving ties to his maternal and paternal origins, and has left behind his constant companion, his beloved, devoted wife, Nane Maria, and their cherished children, Ama, Kojo and Nina. On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, my wife, Rebecca, and our children, I extend our profound condolences to his entire family on its irreparable loss, and wish him peaceful rest in the bosom of the Almighty. He deserves it. God bless him.

1D1F: New steel company inaugurated

Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry and MP for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah has commended B5Plus Steel Company for embracing the One District One Factory by commencing a steel company that promises to be the biggest steel manufacturing company in Africa.

He noted that the initiative is inspiring particularly as it frees government off the load to splash millions of dollars on the importation of steel. And that it will also help reduce import activities of investors within the steel industry.

Delivery the keynote address during the sod-cutting ceremony of the new steel factory at Lorpleku Village, at Dawhenya, Mr. Ahenkorah stated that every year, as a country we import between 200, 000 and 300, 000 metric tons of steel into the country.

Therefore, if the new company is able to produce even about 50, 000 metric tons, it will not only create jobs to the teeming youth around and beyond but also create a great source of import substitution.

B5Plus is a steel company that has its headquarters in Ghana and a conglomerate of business operations renders services such as manufacturing, fabrication, and delivery of iron and steel within the West Africa Sub-Region.

The Minister currently is in talks with the Energy Ministry, CEO of B5Plus, Mukesh Thakwani and the Electricity Company of Ghana to supply a 100 megawatt of power to the factory. In seeing through the One District One Factory nationwide, Government has committed GHC 2.5 billion to it.

He openly doubted their ability to carry out the initiative across the 254 districts by the end of their 4year tenure but maintained that they would build factories in the majority of the districts.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of B5Plus, Mr. Mukesh Thakwani, submitted that per the establishment of the new steel company that covers an arable land of 100 acres, they stand to become the net exporter of steel.

He also bemoaned the protracted land litigations that have bedeviled the Ghanaian land system and in the long run causing investors to develop apathy and finally discontinue whatever investment they are embarking on. Thus, he called on the government to critically address the issue.

And in response, Mr. Ahenkorah mentioned that Government is rolling out the land registration system that is purely digitized to correct the challenge.

He, however, called on the district assemblies and traditional authorities to resolve the land issues and as well release lands to investors for any other developmental projects.
