Don’t waste our time with this wicked propaganda against Zoomlion, Manasseh

I read with disdain the Thursday September 6, 2018 edition of Manasseh’s Folder published by myjoyonline.com with the heading “False reports on Zoomlion” where Joy FM’s Broadcast Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni as usual dragged the corporate name of the revered and hardworking Zoomlion into the mud impugning that media reports about the Friday August 31, 2018 truck launch at the Independence Square was untrue.

Was it really necessary for that your hurriedly and disjointed piece which you showed absolute disregard and respect for the intelligence and ability to do a nice and balanced story by your colleagues? Anyway what you did is more unprofessional than what they did. Manasseh wants the whole world to know that what the media reported was falsehood and that Zoomlion does not deserve the positive kind of media reportage it was greeted with on Monday September 3, 2018 on news headlines and by morning show hosts and discussants. Because Manasseh was in a hurry to as usual let the world agree with him he got even the dates wrong.

The launch was done on the 31st and the reportage came out on Monday 3, September 2018 not June. If you do this kind of research won’t you be misleading readers and yourself? As a senior journalist of your caliber you couldn’t even take your time to read through your habitually recycled write ups. With this kind of work I wonder if your juniors will bring their work for you to edit.

Anyway God has a way of punishing wickedness he made you betray yourself in that article so that people will think you are not serious but is that not true that “you descended before the woman arrived”? I have very much interest in development issues especially waste management and so I was at the Independence Square to take a bite of the ministers’ speeches and that of the company that was bringing the trucks having read the invitation from social media.

I am surprise Zoomlion has not reacted to this your childishness. It is the reason why last two weeks social media poured on your hypocrisy. The Akans will usually say “if an elderly person watches children eat python, when we are counting python eaters he/she is not exonerated. You sat there unconcern when everybody wanted to read your opinion on the bank collapse issue and you came calling it trial ‘something something’. I believe that was the reason why people would have tagged you a hypocrite or someone with a selective and vindictive mindset.

Indeed one Mashoud Bawa posited in his recent article that you were a hypocrite and that your selectivity has made you nothing up to a vigilante. I do agree perfectly with him because when you see wrong that is closed to you, you just close your eyes and when even something good happens in the name of somebody that is in you list of enemies you negate it, this Zoomlion issue is a typical example. By the way have you asked how much a waste truck costs? If you do you would appreciate it even if one buys one truck.

There is a saying in Dagbanli that “if you are found of playing with a puppy, expect that your mouth will be liked by the puppy with its uncleaned mouth”. I believe that is why the company has ignored you in order not to bring you out of your shame. The shame and disgrace you inflicted upon yourself with regards to your pastor’s involvement in the 610 million Capital Bank saga.

Yes I was there and the Executive Chairman in his speech did not state anywhere that the trucks they lined up at Independence Square were 500 nor did he say the trucks were given to the assemblies. He said Zoomlion was augmenting its fleet with 500 more brand new trucks to be stationed at the MMDAs where they operate and was launching the 500 truck project with 150 trucks currently cleared from the port and registered giving prominence to the newly created MMDAs who do not have such trucks for their activities.

During the week I have listened to several radio stations and Zoomlion staff were there speaking after the launch to the issues and indeed they said what happened at the Independence Square was a launch of 150 trucks out of a 500 fleet to boost up their operational capacity at the MMDA’s so what are you talking about as though the company has something to hide? Did you even listen to them on radio or you have joined your pastor on the bait of not patronizing Ghanaian media but rather enjoying animal shows from elsewhere?

My checks indicate however that, Zoomlion has at least one compaction truck and a number of motorized tricycles in almost all MMDAs for their door-to-door (household dustbin private) business and so your conclusion that Zoomlion was going to use the skip trucks partly for their private businesses in the MMDAs is not true.

By the way why do you enjoy putting out issues you are not sure of or an authority in you write ups? I just enquired and I got the right information, why do you do the one sided thing brother? How will they put the garbage in the dustbin up there in the communal container on the truck? Ebwei Manasseh.

I am told the remaining 350 are on schedules with the manufacturers for delivery and the company knowing there is work to be done at the MMDAs will not park the vehicles to rot like the gallopers have been left to rot at the Local Government Institute and became news.

In any case do you think you are that relevant in the business of somebody? Anybody who follows the media in Ghana knows your hatred for Zoomlion and the shunning of your incessant attacks on the company is a clear verdict that you are irrelevant as far as their company is concern. Your attitude is nauseating that is why some of us will usually come your way when you do against that particular company. If your agenda is to see Zoomlion on its knees forget it for it will never happen in your life time.

Where did you go with your supper investigative journalism and allowed banks of high reputation to squander taxpayers’ money to the gargantuan quantum? Or you were busy watching whether government has paid Jospong?

It is interesting that you now know that it is the contract that allows the company to take 400 and the workers 100, don’t you believe that the company would have wished that the operatives are well paid? Why do you take Zoomlion on for? that is a misdirection, do you know the YEA? Do you not know who can increase the workers’ allowances?

Do you have an idea about the fact that in every region in Ghana at Zoomlion’s regional office is a General Manager, Public Jobs Manager, Private Jobs Manager, Finance Manager, Accountant, Regional Environmental Sanitation Supervisor, Head of Janitorial Services, Head of Domestic Services,

Business Development Officer, Operations Officer, Human Resources Managers, YEA Coordinator, Storekeeper, more than ten drivers, at least 8 drivers, 8 janitors and 4 administrative assistants to mention but a few? You wouldn’t know that at the district level apart from the District managers, there is a Tricycle Supervisors, an operations monitors, administrative assistants, at least 3 drivers and 3 janitors I asked and I was told.

They all pay taxes to the government of Ghana. I do not know how many people are at the headquarters of Zoomlion but I know that the kind of work they do demands many hands and sometimes am tempted to believe that they have under declared their numerical strength. Do your own mathematics and tell us they are peddling falsehood.

In our efforts to educate the public, we should be accurate, unbiased and justifiable. If our education and specifically study of journalism and practice is to use it to destroy fellow human beings then we should rethink. In our efforts to destroy people let’s find out who it will affect and whether the public will stand with us.

Behave yourself else you are loosing it.

Uber drivers suspend services indefinitely over 25% charge

Over one hundred Uber drivers on Monday demonstrated against their employers over the 25% charge on fares.

Uber charges 25% on every fare its employees charge their clients in Ghana.

However, the drivers argue that the 25% charge is exorbitant and, therefore, want the figure slashed to enable them survive the hardships in the country.

“Uber only controls their apps but charges 25 percent  on  every  service we offer and this is killing our business," one demonstrator said adding, “all attempts to resolve the issue have been unsuccessful”.

They further accused Uber of disconnecting them from the App without their knowledge and also implementing policies without their input.

They have subsequently suspended services untill further notice.

The protesters numbering close 150, started demonstrating from the Kawukudi Park at Nima and converged at the Ghana International Trade Fair at La, Accra.

About 20 police officers accompanied the protesters who were draped in red.

Shatta Wale not 'fit for Nigerian market' – Nigerian singer

Rising Nigerian singer, N2nelly, claims that self-acclaimed Dancehall King, Shatta Wale's kind of music is not fit for the Nigerian market.

Speaking on Atinka TV's Jukebox show with DJ xtra and Oforiwaa Saturday, she said Shatta Wale's songs are noisy and uninspiring.

"The youth look up to us, and other things. 20% of the good things they learn should come from us.".

"We need songs that can help and encourage people. I don’t think Shatta Wale’s songs carry such messages," she noted.

She further stated that unlike Shatta Wale, colleague dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy, drops songs with good contents and that she would choose Stonebwoy over Shatta Wale on any day.

The Nigerian is currently based in Ghana to promote her new single "Rewind".

Letshego Group posts double digit growth in profit before tax and loans growth

Letshego Holdings Limited (“Letshego Group”) today announced its financial results for the first half of 2018, affirming solid performance across key areas of the business. Highlights include double digit growth for the Group’s profit before tax as well as gross loans and advances, compared to the same period last year. Profit before tax was up 19% to BWP590million, with gross loans and advances increasing 12%, to BWP8.7 billion.

Operating Income increased by 15% following the expansion of various strategic initiatives, including agency banking, mobile digital platforms, strategic partnerships, cross selling and the launch of new solutions in select markets.

Operating Costs increased by 17%, which included BWP10 million in once-off costs following a write down of redundant IT equipment as the Group prepares to migrate to a cloud environment.

A higher effective tax rate of 38% resulted in a lower increase in profit after tax for the period of 11%.

Impairment provisions increased 37% following the implementation of new accounting standards, ‘IFRS 9’ as of 1 January 2018. This meant a BWP150 million decline in the Group’s retained earnings and an increase in impairment provisions from BWP402million from BWP552 million. IFRS 9 has also resulted in an increase in the Group’s Coverage Ratio to 95% (IAS 39 FY 2017: 70%). Positively, Letshego Group’s loan recoveries continue to improve, however Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda experienced an increase in impairments this first half of 2018.

The Group continues to see gradual growth in deposits, with Mozambique and Rwanda seeing greater momentum in deposits than other markets in the Group’s footprint.

Letshego continues to make good progress with its diversification strategy into non- government segments across markets, with access remaining a core priority as the Group centres its focus around enhancing customer value.

More specifically, Ghana and Tanzania have made the most progress in extending solutions to informal segments. Following Letshego Ghana’s launch of ‘Qwikloan’ late 2017, in partnership with MTN Ghana, more than 2.5 million loans have been disbursed to over 600,000 customers.

Letshego’s Affordable Housing and Education Eco-System solutions remain key drivers of growth in the Group’s MSE (Micro and Small Entrepreneurs) loan book – together the two solutions constitute 6% of the total loan portfolio.

In support of Letshego’s financial inclusion agenda, the Group remains focused on increasing digital access channels, as opposed to adding more physical outlets to its regional footprint. Digital channels include USSD, Agency Banking, Direct Sales Agents and Cards.

In the first half of this year, Letshego has doubled the number of independent agent access points, and increased USSD registrations by more than 50%. Cards, the Group’s most recently launched channel, is achieving positive progress in roll out to customers in Namibia, Nigeria and Tanzania.

Colm Patterson, Group Chief Financial Officer for the Letshego Group commented, “We are pleased with the Group’s good performance for the first half of the year. Letshego’s ongoing success in forging strategic partnerships, rolling out our LetsGo solution in select markets and mobilising our focus and strategy continues to deliver dividends. Borrowing customers have increased by more than 50% and deposit customers have doubled over the same period, although deposit customer growth remains off a low base. We hope to maintain this momentum for the second half of the year.”

Funding, Capital Structure and Dividend Policy
Letshego continues to reduce its dependence on bank loan funding by issuing notes off existing DMTN programmes in active domestic debt capital markets. Ghana recently issued GHS95 million of new notes with 5, 6 and 7 year maturities, with all issuances being oversubscribed.

Letshego Ghana obtained approval to increase its DMTN Programme limit by GHS200mn. Three new bonds with a face value of GHS95million were issued in the first half of the year, maintaining a stable bond rating of BBB+(GH) from Global Credit Rating (GCR) – three notches above investment grade. The Group’s credit rating from Moody’s remains unchanged.

This first half also saw conclusion of BWP256million of funding from international investors. New funders include development finance institutions, investors who focus on micro and inclusive finance ventures and impact investors. Most of these newer finance partners are headquartered in the UK and Europe, all with a keen interest in sustainable development in Africa.

The funding arrangements mentioned above are expected to deliver treasury benefits and mitigate funding risk for the Group by achieving geographical diversification in its funding base, increasing the current number of funders, securing longer tenors as well as reducing the Group’s overall open foreign exchange exposure by drawing new local currency-denominated facilities.

Letshego Group has seen recent changes in senior leadership, with Chris Low stepping down as Group Managing Director to pursue other opportunities, after five years at the helm. The Group Board confirmed that recruitment of a replacement GMD (Group Managing Director) is at an advanced stage. In the interim, Group operations are being overseen by a Management Transition Team, led by Colm Patterson, Letshego’s Group Chief Financial Officer.

Robert Thornton, an Independent Non- Executive Director and Chairman of the HR Committee and Member of the Investment Committee, tendered his resignation from the Board effective 2 August 2018.

In the context of senior leadership changes, Colm Patterson, Group Chief Financial Officer concluded, “The Letshego Group remains on track and committed to its current strategy of increasing access to simple and appropriate solutions across its 11 market footprint, leveraging digital technology and strategic partnerships – ultimately achieving our collective objective in increasing financial inclusion across Africa.”

Mahama’s return in order due to Akufo-Addo’s ‘utterly shambolic performance’- Kwakye Ofosu

A former Deputy Minister of Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has slammed critics of the second coming of John Mahama as president, insisting that his boss has a good chance in the 2020 election due to the shambolic performance of the current government.

“Given the utterly shambolic performance of President Akufo-Addo,it is shocking that some individuals and analysts have lined up to dismiss President Mahama's prospects in the 2020 elections,” he posted his Facebook wall  Saturday.

Some critics have slammed the former president for staging a comeback after losing by a 10 percent vote margin in the last general election. They argued that Mr. Mahama should sit back and allow a new person to lead the party because he’s now “a damaged commodity” per the massive vote gap in the last election.

But Kwakye Ofosu argues that such views are “so contemptuous and disrespectful of the Ghanaian electorate as it would seem to suggest that they are content with mediocrity and would line up to vote for a hopelessly incompetent President and his government who promised so much and have delivered virtually nothing significant, only because they voted against the former President in a previous election.”

Below is the full statement:

Given the utterly shambolic performance of President Akufo-Addo,it is shocking that some individuals and analysts have lined up to dismiss President Mahama's prospects in the 2020 elections.

The main plank of their argument is that the latter lost in 2016.Never mind that the incumbent President lost two elections on the trot. They also contend that Ghanaians prefer a new face when that same electorate voted for a very old face who had been trying to be President for at least two decades and actually contested three elections.

That view is so contemptuous and disrespectful of the Ghanaian electorate as it would seem to suggest that they are content with mediocrity and would line up to vote for a hopelessly incompetent President and his government who promised so much and have delivered virtually nothing significant, only because they voted against the former President in a previous election.

They are clutching unto historical trends despite it being clear that the outcome of the 2016 elections tore to shreds, old notions about the electoral behaviour of Ghanaians.

The only thing the electorate seems to look out for now,is performance. And it takes little to predict that this Akufo-Addo government that has foisted such unprecedented hardships on Ghanaians, while failing so abjectly to deliver on key campaign promises,is on its way out.

And if the Akufo-Addo praise singers are in doubt, their principal, President Akufo-Addo, made that pretty clear when stating on 16th May,2016 in Accra, that a non-performing President is not guaranteed a second term.

This metric would no doubt be applied to him come 2020.

Ghana Beyond Aid can't be achieved if we waste money on the political class – Prof. Karikari

Dean of the School of Communication Studies, at the Wisconsin International University College, Professor Kwame Karikari, has jabbed government over its profligate spending on the political class.

And that as a country if we continue to waste money on politicians as seen by successive governments, the majority of the populace will continue to be beneath the poverty ladder. And the government’s vision of “Ghana beyond Aid” would be a mirage.

He noted that the gargantuan expenditure on appointees, parliamentarians and other instructions like the Council of State and some traditional leaders is just outrageous.

To mention but a few, their salaries, rent allowances, the fleet of cars at the Presidency, the ministries, per diems from frequent travels. As if that is not enough, the cost of maintenance of these vehicles, cost of fuels by all appointees, cost of utility bills has bedeviled the country over the years.

Addressing the media and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on the “Assessment of Key Commitments and Policy Propositions of the NPP Government on Fiscal Transparency and Accountability Measures by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), Prof. Karikari underscored the “cry” of government on the wage bill.

According to him, usually, the government turns its attention to civil servants of being the cause and obviously forgetting the expenses it does on politicians.

He made reference to a loan facility that was secured by the Parliamentary Service from the Societe General Ghana (SGG) Limited with the Government of Ghana as the Guarantor – a credit facility of $22.5 million (approximately GHC96.3 million) for the purchase of official vehicles for all the 275 Members of Parliament (MPs). This was in 2017.

He quizzed: “Why won’t people in politics walk and exhibit modest life in their day-to-day activities? And why is it that if I'm a laborer who stands and wins elections and enters into government or Parliament, I must drive in a V8 whilst I was a labourer I could not purchase a bicycle?”

And that countries like Denmark, Sweden and the even UK where we go borrowing to run our economy, that is not the way their politicians waste money. In those countries, he explained further that cars are only bought for the Prime Minister and the opposition leaders. MPs buy their own vehicles.

Therefore, he urged the media and Civil Society Organizations to keep the government in check.

Seven injured in Paris knife attack

Seven people have been injured, four seriously, in an attack by a man wielding a knife and an iron bar in the French capital, Paris, police say.

The attack took place just before 23:00 (21:00 GMT) on the banks of a canal in Paris's 19th district.

People playing a game of pétanque nearby threw balls at the attacker to try to stop him.

The man, said to be Afghan, was later arrested. The incident is currently not being treated as a terrorist attack.

The man initially stabbed two men and a woman near the MK2 cinema on the quai de Loire, along the Ourcq canal, reports say.

Eyewitness Youssef Najah, 28, said he was walking beside the canal when he saw a man running and holding a knife about 25-30cm (10-11 inches) long.

"There were around 20 people chasing him. They started throwing pétanque balls at him," he said.

"Around four or five balls hit him in the head, but they weren't able to stop him," he added.

The man then reportedly attacked the two British tourists in a nearby street.

The mayor of Paris thanked the officers of the police anti-crime squad (BAC) who arrested the man. She also thanked the passers-by who tried to stop the attacker.

The UK Foreign Office said in a statement: "We are urgently investigating this incident and are in close contact with the French authorities."

A French police source said: "At this stage, there is nothing to indicate that it could be a terrorist attack."

There have been several knife attacks in France over the past few months, but few have resulted in terrorist investigations.

Free SHS will help create many Busias from poor families – Bawumia

The adherents of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition have shown greater care towards the needs of the vulnerable and underprivileged, much more than the avowed socialists, the Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated.

This tradition, which began governance under the Progress Party government of Prof Kofi Abrefa Busia in 1969, and continued under President John Agyekum Kufuor under the New Patriotic Party government, and is now being continued under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has consistently sought to implement policies and programmes specifically tailored to meet the needs of the ordinary person.

Ironically, the parties claiming to be of socialist inclination, today most visibly represented by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have rather sought to either impede or cancel such programmes, which gives the lie to the principles they claim to hold dear.

Vice President Bawumia made the assertion while speaking at a ceremony to celebrate the life and legacy of Prof Kofi Abrefa Busia, Prime Minister in the 2nd Republic, at Wenchi in the Brong Ahafo Region on Saturday 8th September, 2018.

“The Busia government was the first government of the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition. He left the blueprint for welfare capitalism which other governments from the tradition have implemented, especially the blueprint designed to ensure inclusive and holistic development for all” the Vice President indicated.

This blueprint led to the introduction of a number of programmes by the Busia government, including the creation of a new Ministry to seek the welfare, training and employment of youth, culminating in the National Service Corps, and a Voluntary Work Camps Association, among others.

He also instituted a Social Security Fund for the construction of low cost houses; a Rural Development Fund to provide the rural areas with good drinking water, through the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation, Latrine pits, markets and health posts.

The academic in Dr Busia also saw to the building of Secondary schools across the country; introduced Experimental Schools on pilot basis, which is now called Junior High Schools; provided free text books in all the schools, as well as free ‘Achimota’ sandals to pupils in middle school.

“Dr. Busia also saw the future development of Ghana in terms of rural industrialization if we are to prevent the phenomenon of rural-urban migration and what that means for national development. In his mind, unmanaged population drifts away from rural areas in search of greener pastures can only mean creating the very same conditions of poverty, unemployment, poor housing, under-provision of social amenities that they are trying to escape from,” Dr Bawumia maintained.

When the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition returned to power in 2001, President John Agyekum Kufuor, Dr Busia’s protégé, introduced initiatives such as National Youth Employment Programme, School Feeding Programme, Capitation Grant, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), free maternal care for all pregnant women under NHIS, and the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme under which welfare grants are paid to the extreme poor.

“President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has continued with the philosophy of welfare capitalism by introducing initiatives such as Free Senior High School Policy, Planting for Food and Jobs, ‘One Village One Dam’, ‘One District One Factory’, ‘One District One Warehouse’.

“We have also restored Teacher and Nursing Trainee allowances, which allowed qualified but needy persons to acquire employable skills but was cancelled by the party which claims to care for the poor, NDC. We have reduced the price of water and electricity, and established three Development Authorities to ensure development projects reach every community in Ghana. Under the Nation Builders Corps, 100,000 graduates will be engaged in 7 different modules and be paid monthly while they gain the necessary experience to step out on their own.

“This is a practical demonstration of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo’s commitment to caring for the vulnerable and needy in society. This tradition, as envisioned by Prof Kofi Abrefa Busia, has continued to be socially responsible and has not sought to cancel programmes designed to make the life of the ordinary Ghanaian better,” Vice President Bawumia declared.

The late Prof Busia would have been especially proud about the introduction of the Free Senior High School policy, Vice President Bawumia believes.

“After we have provided for food, water and roads, one thing Dr Busia would want us to do without fail is to ensure that every child in the country, regardless of where they live, and regardless of their parents’ ability, gets the opportunity to go to school.

“How else could a rural boy like Dr Abrefa Busia grow up to become such a scholar? He believed and treasured the power of the mind and in the development in freedom of every citizen. There should be no barriers to the development of minds.  It is a profitable social investment for the future. Imagine if Dr Abrefa Busia did not get the chance to go to Mfantsipim School. Who then says that Free SHS is not good or it is not time for it to start?”

The Vice President extolled Prof Busia’s vision and the principles under-pinning his politics, which continue to influence modern day Ghana.

“Dr Busia’s vision was founded on the principles of free governments, multiparty democracy, free press, the rule of law and principles of democratic accountability. This is basically what Ghana is practicing today. He wanted to build a democratic welfare state where people live in a social framework in which each is his brother’s keeper.”

“Thank You For Free SHS” – Awulae Attibrukusu III To President Akufo-Addo

Awulae Attibrukusu III, Chief of Axim, has expressed the appreciation of the Chiefs and people of Axim to the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for the introduction and implementation of the Free Senior High School Policy.

According to Awulae Attibrukusu III, some one thousand two hundred students (1,200) have been beneficiaries of the Free SHS policy in the Axim area, with more students expected to be enrolled in September into schools located in the traditional area.

“We thank you for the introduction of Free SHS system, to help parents and guardians across the country, especially those in the rural areas,” he said.

The Axim Chief continued, “Mr. President, you always keep your promise. When you pledge, you fulfill. You said you were going to bring us Free SHS, and you have fulfilled that pledge. We thank you, and may we give you an applause for what you have done.”

Awulae Attibrukusu III made this known on Sunday, 9th September, 2018, when he delivered a speech at the Kundum Festival of the Chiefs and people of the Axim Traditional Area, which was attended by President Akufo-Addo.

Expressing his heartfelt appreciation to the President for the on-going projects in Axim, including the construction of a sports complex in Axim, the Chief of Axim, in particular, thanked the President for the imminent construction of the Axim sea defence wall.

He noted that since his enstoolment on 10th August 1988, he has, at every Kundum festival, appealed to successive governments for the construction of the sea defence wall.

“I am happy that, today, we are going to see the light. And, as you promised during your campaign time, when you were at my palace, you said to me, ‘Awulae Attibrukusu, I promise that, if, God willing, I am given the mandate, Axim Sea defence wall will be the first project that I will do for you,” he said.

He, therefore, thanked President Akufo-Addo for fulfilling his pledge, and stated that “the people of Lower Axim, Upper Axim and all the people of Axim are grateful to you. We will ensure this project proceeds smoothly, and we will make sure the project is completed on time.”
