Schools want to pay research subjects to eat avocados

A team composed of researchers from four U.S. colleges is seeking subjects interested in being paid to eat avocados for six months.

Loma Linda University announced researchers from its School of Health are partnering with teams from Penn State University, Tufts University and the University of California, Los Angeles, to conduct a six-month study that will examine whether avocados promote weight loss.

Each school will gather 250 subjects and the participants will be split into two groups, one that consumes an avocado a day and another that eats two avocados per month.

Loma Linda University said interested applicants must be at least 25 years old, with male participants measuring at least 40 inches around the waist and female subjects measuring at least 35 inches across the waist.

Participants in both groups will each receive $300 at the end of the study.

UBA grows gross earnings by 16%, delivers 17% return on average equity

Africa’s leading financial institution, United Bank for Africa Plc has announced its audited 2018 half year financial results, showing strong growth across key performance metrics as well as a significant contribution from its African subsidiaries.

Despite declining yield environment in two core markets, Nigeria and Ghana, the pan Africa financial institution delivered double digit growth in gross earnings, as it recorded a 16 percent year-on-year rise in top-line to N258 billion, compared to N223 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017. This performance, according to analysts, underscores the capacity of the Group to deliver strong performance through economic cycles, even in a challenging business environment.

According to the report filed to the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Wednesday, UBA, reported strong growth in operating income at N168.5 billion, compared to N161.8 billion in the first half of 2017, an increase of 4.1 percent. Notwithstanding the inflation-induced cost pressure in the period, UBA finished the first half of the year strongly, with a Profit Before Tax of N58.1 billion. The Profit After Tax also improved to N43.8 billion, a 3.4 percent growth compared to N42.3 billion achieved in the corresponding period of 2017. The first half of the year profit, translated to pre-tax and post-tax return on average equity of 23% and 17% respectively.

UBA’s foreign operations continue to grow in importance, contributing 40% of the Group’s profit, which according to analysts attests to the benefit of UBA’s Pan-African strategy and reinforces the Bank’s objective of achieving 50 percent earnings contribution from offshore subsidiaries.

In the first six months of the year, the Bank’s Total Assets grew 4.9% to N4.27 trillion and Customer Deposits rose by 6.1 percent to N2.90 trillion, compared to N2.73 trillion as at December 2017. This growth trajectory underlines UBA’s market share gain, as it increasingly wins customers through its re-engineered customer service and innovative digital offerings.  The Group’s Shareholders’ Funds remained strong at N496.3 billion, even as implementation of IFRS 9 impacted the total equity of the bank and its peers.

In line with its culture of paying both interim and final cash dividend, the Board of Directors of UBA Plc declared an interim dividend of N0.20 per share for every ordinary share of N0.50 each held on the qualification date – Wednesday, September 05, 2018.

Commenting on the results, the Group Managing Director/CEO, United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA), Mr. Kennedy Uzoka said:  "Our performance in the first half the year reflects the resilience of our business model and strategies. Despite declining yields in two core markets, Nigeria and Ghana, we delivered double digit growth in gross earnings. Our performance demonstrates the success of our digital banking initiatives and broader Customer-First strategies”

“We are integrating banking to our customers’ lifestyle, simplifying processes for routine transactions and driving financial inclusion by making banking services accessible and affordable. We are creating opportunities for wealth creation and economic progress, as we empower our customers through innovative platforms and solutions that support their personal and business growth. Our commitment to delivering excellent service is paying-off, as we increasingly win a bigger share of customers’ wallet across our chosen markets. We won the highly coveted “Africa’s Best Digital Bank” Award by Euro money, demonstrating our pioneering initiatives are being recognised with Leo, our digital banker having been name checked by Mark Zuckerberg” Uzoka said.

“Our enhanced asset-liability management strategies improved asset yield and grew interest income by 21% despite prevailing yield environment. Our re-engineered sales structure provided the impetus for renewed retail deposit growth. I am particularly pleased by the 24% year-to-date growth in retail savings and current account deposits, underpinning the increasing penetration of our digital offerings and the Group’s overarching goal of democratizing banking across Africa. We improved net interest margin to 7.4%in line with our 2018 target, notwithstanding strong competition for wholesale deposits and the impact of rising global interest rates on our foreign currency funding,” he concluded

Also speaking on UBA’s financial performance and position, the Group CFO, Ugo Nwaghodoh said; “We finished the first half of the year in a stronger position and we are optimistic on the future of our business. Amidst economic recovery and uncertainties in Nigeria, our largest market, we grew net interest income and operating income by 9.6% and 4.1% respectively. We doubled revenue from trade services and grew e-banking income by 24%, a testament to our market share gain, which is driven by innovative offerings. Our foreign operations contributed 40% of Group’s profit, underlining the benefit of our Pan-African strategy.

“We sustained our asset quality, with cost of risk at 0.8%. Whilst the loan book declined by 6.5% due to prepayments from some customers in Nigeria and Ghana, we grew the overall balance sheet by 5% in the first half of the year. The Group’s capital adequacy ratio of 23%, Bank’s liquidity ratio of 48% and loan-to-deposit ratio of 57% all reinforce our capacity to grow, with ample headroom for risk asset creation,” Nwaghodoh said.

In recognition of UBA’s dominance in Africa’s digital banking space, UBA emerged the Best Institution in Digital Banking across Africa, courtesy of Euromoney. Earlier in the year, UBA launched Leo, an e-chat service using artificial intelligence to help customers execute transactions on Facebook, the first of its kind in Africa. The Bank is set to replicate the success of Leo on WhatsApp on September 1st, bringing convenience to its growing youthful customer base across Africa.

UBA is one of Africa’s leading banks with operations in 20 African countries. It also has presence in the global financial centres; London, New York and Paris.  UBA provides banking services to more than 15 million customers globally, through diverse channels.

Akufo-Addo lauds VW’s decision to set-up assembly plant in Ghana

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has welcomed the decision by German car manufacturing giant, Volkswagen, to establish a vehicle assembly plant in Ghana.

According to the President, an agreement between Volkswagen, the Government of Ghana, and a local Ghanaian company for the assembly, and, ultimately, the production of automobiles in Ghana has been reached, after a business meeting between officials from Ghana and a German business delegation.

The President disclosed this at a joint press briefing held as part of the official visit of the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel to Ghana, on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the Jubilee House in Accra.

Addressing the press, which comprised the local and international media, President Akufo-Addo said, “there are so many areas that our bilateral relationship has offered us, but the key part of it for me is the emphasis on investment and trade corporation.”

He emphasized Ghana’s “determination to deal with the matters confronting our country such as youth employment, the desire of our youth to seek greener pastures elsewhere by improving the management of our national economy.”

President Akufo-Addo stressed that “The stronger the economy we have, the more opportunities it gives to the young people and obviously the pressure that will be on them to embark on those hazardous undertakings will be dealt with”.

He told the press that, “in so doing we’ve set for ourselves a vision of a Ghana Beyond Aid, a Ghana which will depend more and more on mobilizing its own internal resources to confront the issues of development that there are before us.”

In all of this, President Akufo-Addo indicated that “there are a lot of opportunities here, and we are hoping that this business delegation that you have brought with you will see the opportunities that there are in several of the flagship programmes of our government, the One-District-One-Factory, the industrial parks that we are determined to create.”

President Akufo-Addo also assured Chancellor Merkel of Ghana’s continued corporation with the international community on issues bothering illegal migration.

On the threat of terrorism, President Akufo-Addo thanked Chancellor Merkel and Germany for the assistance towards fighting this threat and the jihadist menace.

“Within our modest means, we will continue to play our effective role, because clearly it is in our interest to do so. It is in our interest to contribute to ridding the region of these instruments of destabilization and destruction,” he assured.

Carl Bernstein: Trump attacks 'degenerate' Watergate reporter

US President Donald Trump is waging a war of words with legendary Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein over a story about his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen.

On Wednesday, the president called Mr Bernstein a "sloppy" and "degenerate fool" who invented stories.

Mr Bernstein fired back on Thursday, tweeting that he spent his life "bringing the truth to light" and "no taunt" could diminish that commitment.

His story reported Mr Trump knew about a 2016 meeting with Russians.

On Twitter, the president said "CNN is being torn apart from within" over refusing to admit their mistakes, adding that Mr Bernstein "is being laughed at all over the country".

Mr Bernstein, a famed journalist who covered the Watergate scandal during the Nixon presidency, responded saying he stands by his reporting.

The story in question had quoted sources as saying that Cohen, the president's former personal lawyer, was ready to testify that Mr Trump was aware of the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between his son, Donald Trump Jr and Russians who said they had dirt on Hillary Clinton.

Cohen's attorney, Lanny Davis, revealed on Monday that he was CNN's source and has since recanted his statement.

CNN has stood by the story and Mr Bernstein, tweeting at the president: "Make no mistake, Mr President, CNN does not lie."

On Thursday, Mr Trump called for CNN president Jeff Zucker to be fired over the network's "hatred and extreme bias" towards him.

The president continued to lambast US media on Twitter, saying "they only have their hatred and agenda", adding that the media is also responsible for "fake books".

Mr Trump's clash with Mr Bernstein comes as fellow-Watergate reporter Bob Woodward is set to release a book next month detailing life inside the Trump White House.

Mr Bernstein co-wrote an article that had multiple anonymous sources claiming Cohen said the president was aware of the June 2016 meeting.

That meeting involved Mr Trump's son, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort and an influential Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya.

In the 27 July article, CNN stated Mr Davis had declined to comment, and quoted multiple anonymous sources.

The next day, the Washington Post also reported on the claims and cited Mr Davis as a source.

On Monday, however, Mr Davis confirmed to Buzzfeed News that he was CNN's anonymous source and retracted his claims.

"I made a mistake," he said, adding that he should have been clearer to reporters that he could not personally verify the information he gave.

When Mr Davis appeared on CNN with presenter Anderson Cooper, last week, he said "the reporting of the story got mixed up".

CNN stands by its story. Trump supporters argue Mr Davis' statements undermine the original article.

Cohen's case has stoked speculation he could testify against Mr Trump in Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian meddling two years ago in the US elections.

He pleaded guilty to eight counts of tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance crimes last week.

19 Things to Try When You Can’t Sleep

When you just can’t seem to turn off, it’s always best to have a back-up strategy—and I’ve got 19 options for you to try right now (unless you’re reading this at the office, in that case, do not try to fall asleep).

1. Think Positive

It’s that easy—according to science, ridding your mind of those negative thoughts (“It’s so late, I’ll never get to sleep at this rate,” “I’m going to be so tired tomorrow at work,” “This stinks”) calms you down and makes you more likely to fall asleep.

2. Pick One Thing to Focus On

You know how they always say to try counting sheep? Well, focusing on something specific (like filling a treasure chest) could be just what you need to get sleepy. Choose to focus on your breath, or repeat a calming mantra over in your head—as long as it’s not “I can’t sleep,” because see above.

3. Pretend to Be Tired

Trick your brain into thinking you’re exhausted by, well, pretending you are. Concentrate on the kinds of things you would feel if you were tired, like drooping eyes, the room darkening, or the sensation of sinking into your bed—and before you know it, you just might experience them!

4. Adjust Your Temperature

What’s your ideal sleeping environment? Even if you can’t completely control the heating and cooling system in your home, you can control your body. So, put the fan closer to your face when you’re too hot or bundle up when you’re too cold. Science says the ideal sleeping temperature is 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit, so best to shoot for that!

5. Read

No, not on your Kindle or phone, but with a solid, made-of-paper book—to help you out, here are 21 titles that career coaches recommend. Dim the lights in your room (or use a lamp) just enough so you can see comfortably, and read—don’t worry about remembering the story or getting to a certain page, just take it in until you feel yourself getting sleepy.

6. Listen to Music

Now, I’m not suggesting you go blasting an intense album (unless that works for you), but some simple, acoustic, minimal percussion music might be perfect for getting your eyes to droop.

7. Or Try a Podcast or Audiobook

Choose your favorite podcast or a non-action-packed audiobook, preferably one that’s dense, and let the soothing voices quiet your mind. It’s not about retaining the information—it’s about giving yourself some comforting background noise.

Bonus tip: Try out the Sleep With Me podcast that’s literally meant to bore you to bed (you’ll be surprised how well it works).

8. Or White Noise

Sometimes the unbearable silence is what’s keeping you up—so, try a white noise app to fill the space with subtle sounds.

9. Or a Meditation App

Download a breathing app like Headspace, or a nature sounds app that will soothe your thoughts and make feel like you’re napping on the beach.

(For more ambiance apps, try out these eight free options!)

10. Stretch

Yes, you can do this without getting out of bed. Put your legs up against the wall to calm your central nervous system, or try happy baby pose or child’s pose to relax your body. Alternatively, do some light leg and arm movements and exercises on your back to release any excess tension.

11. Relax From Head to Toe

A colleague swore by this: Concentrate on each muscle, starting from your toes, and tell yourself “My feet are getting sleepy,” “My right leg is getting very sleepy,” “My stomach is asleep,” while you relax each body part. She says she never makes it past her hips!

12. Try the 4-7-8 Exercise

According to science, focusing on your breathing decreases your heartrate and blood pressure, which is prime for sleepiness.

So, try this technique:

  • Inhale for four seconds
  • Hold your breath for seven seconds
  • Exhale for eight seconds
  • Repeat!

13. Journal

If your mind’s racing, grab a notebook and jot down every thought you have—don’t make it linear or pretty, just get everything out until you’re out of ideas and start to tire.

14. Work on the Thing That’s Keeping You Up

If you find that there’s something really nagging you and keeping you awake, don’t just pretend it’ll go away. Whether it’s responding quickly to an email (or writing it and saving it for the morning when you can properly spellcheck it), jotting down some ideas for your upcoming presentation, or even taking out the trash before you forget, getting it over and done with will make sleep a heck of a lot easier. Just don’t spend all night working on it!

15. Do Your Least Favorite Task

As Muse writer Varci Vartanian says, “‘If it’s after bedtime, do something that you enjoy a lot less than sleep!’ [says Dr. Stein] If it’s been 20 minutes and you still haven’t drifted off, get out of bed and attack the most boring, least stimulating task imaginable. Sleep might seem more welcoming after spending a lively half-hour with a dusty college textbook on literary theory.”

Or, even just thinking about the task might be enough to make you fall asleep.

16. Drink Something Hot

Making yourself a glass of hot milk with honey (I swear it’s delicious) or decaffeinated tea could warm your body up for rest. Want more options? Here are 10 drinks that’ll help you get to sleep, backed by science!

17. Stick Your Feet Out

Yup—research says that keeping your toes cool makes you more likely to dose off. So pop them out of the covers and get snoozing!

18. Cover Your Eyes

Even if your room’s pretty dark, there’s probably some light that makes its way in. So, if you don’t have an eye mask, grab a warm washcloth (soak and microwave for a few seconds) or a t-shirt and cover your eyes so that all you can see is sleep.

19. Watch a Good Movie or Browse the Web

I don’t want to be the one who says browse through social media or watch Netflix, because glaring screens are probably not the best idea—but I’m also not going to say they don’t work. Because sometimes, you just need a comforting movie or TV show or an endless scroll on Imgur to distract you from insomnia.

That being said, try everything else above first, because it could also backfire and turn into a long, unproductive night of technology.

Government will address challenges with double track system – Oppong Nkrumah

Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister of Information, has expressed government’s determination to work tirelessly with all stakeholders to address the challenges that may arise as a result of the double track Senior High School system.

It has assured that all the problems that have come up with the implementation of the double track system will be dealt with immediately by the government.

This was contained in a speech read on his behalf at a town hall meeting organised by his outfit at Twifo-Praso in the the Twifo Atimokwa District on Tuesday.

The Double-Track System is to create room to absorb more students into SHSs, thus increasing enrolment, reduce class sizes, increase contact hours and increase the number of holidays, and would be achieved with the existing infrastructure.

He said at best, the double track system would help address the challenges facing the implementation of the free SHS as a temporal intervention until the needed infrastructure was put in place; stating that, not all SHSs would be on the Double-Track system.

Giving statistics to buttress government's commitment to education, he announced that, the ministry has supplied 96,403 mono desk, 33,171 pieces of dinning furniture, 3,033 teachers chairs and tables, 12,953 students beds, 4,335 students mattresses as well as 5,135 computer laboratory chairs.

He called on Ghanaians to stop the apprehension of the double Track System and make meaningful suggestions that would enhance its successful implementation and effectiveness of the system.

The system, according to him had worked successfully elsewhere therefore the decision by government was not out of the blues but from critical analysis of the benefits thereof.

He said government’s plan to implement the system was to ensure that no youth was left behind, adding that, about 180,000 students were most likely to be left behind if they do not get admissions into schools in September, when the academic calendar begins.

Some participants in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the forum, called on the government to use the oil revenues to finance the free education policy to ensure financial viability and sustainability.

They raised concerns about the bad roads and drains, governance and security issues, lack of social amenities in their communities, insanitary condition, delay in disbursing the disability fund and the need to revive defunct factories, among others.
