Jordan PM quits after austerity protests

Jordan's Prime Minister Hani Mulki has resigned after several days of protests against tax rises and austerity measures.

The protesters say a new tax bill backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will hurt the poor and middle class.

The recent demonstrations are the biggest in years and have seen police fire tear gas and block roads.

Mulki had been summoned by the monarch following five days of protests against planned austerity measures implemented by the Jordanian government.

Guatemala volcano: Dozens die as Fuego volcano erupts

Twenty-five people have been killed and hundreds injured in the most violent eruption in decades in Guatemala.

The Fuego volcano, about 40km (25 miles) south-west of the capital Guatemala City, has been spewing rocks, black smoke and ash into the sky.

A flow of lava hit the village of El Rodeo, killing people inside houses. The main airport in Guatemala City has been closed.

President Jimmy Morales has declared three days of national mourning.

In a statement issued late on Sunday, he spoke of the nation's "deep pain" caused by the "irreparable losses" in human lives.

Sergio Cabañas, head of the country's National Disaster Management Agency (Conred), told a local radio station that a lava stream had changed course towards El Rodeo.

"Unfortunately El Rodeo was buried and we haven't been able to reach the La Libertad village because of the lava and maybe there are people that died there too."

This eruption is the biggest since 1974, according to local experts.

Mr Cabañas later said the dead included a member of his agency's staff.

Several children are among those confirmed dead.

Videos published by local media show bodies lying on top of a lava flow and rescuers attending to people covered in ash.

One woman told the Diario de Centroamerica that lava had poured through corn fields and she thought more people may have died.

"Not everyone escaped, I think they were buried," Consuelo Hernandez said.

A total of about 1.7 million people have been affected by the eruption, officials say.

Officials have advised people to wear masks as protection against falling ash in four of Guatemala's regions.

The military is providing assistance, from rescue operations to setting up temporary shelters and clearing volcanic ash from the runway at Guatemala City's La Aurora airport.

My subjects and I are enjoying your good policies; stay focused – Dormaahene to govt

The Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area in the Brong Ahafo Region, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, has urged all Ghanaians irrespective of political affiliation to pray for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP government to successfully implement its policies and programmes.

Emphasising that “leadership is not easy” at any level, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu maintains that the Akufo-Addo government would need everyone on board to take Ghana to the next level of her development process.

The Dormaa Omanhene made the call while speaking at his palace in Dormaa Ahenkro on Sunday 3rd June, 2018 when the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia called on him and his elders as part of his one-day tour of the region.

Welcoming the Vice President to the region, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu stressed that the Akufo-Addo government had started on a good note in the 17 months since it assumed the reins of power, and it is important to support it to succeed.

“Leadership is not easy. Even being the chief of Dormaa is not easy, let alone a whole nation. I will plead with every Ghanaian to pray for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Vice. They are in now in charge of the country, and we have to pray and support them for them to succeed, whether you voted for them or not. If you don’t support them today, who do you expect to support you when your time comes? If we don’t support them we will all lose.”

The Dormaa Omanhene commended government for ‘life-saving’ programmes such as Free Senior High School Education, and the fight against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey, which had “restored sanity” to environmental management.

“Of course, some people will criticize this programme (FSHS) introduced by President Nana Akufo-Addo, his Vice Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP, but I will urge you to ignore such talk but rather focus on addressing the few challenges. All of us, including my citizens in Dormaa are enjoying the benefits, so please stay focused and deliver.”

In brief remarks, Vice President Bawumia expressed government’s appreciation to the chiefs and people of Dormaa for the generous donation of land for the construction of a Sports Development Centre, and assured of government’s continued efforts to ensure a national spread of development projects including roads and educational facilities.

Vice President Bawumia explained that initiatives such as the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) and Planting for Food and Jobs were designed to facilitate the creation of employment opportunities for the youth, a matter dear to the heart of government.

The Vice President, who was accompanied by a number of government and party officials including the MP for Dormaa Central who also doubles as the Minister for Health, Hon Kwaku Agyemang Manu; the Minister for Zongo and Inner City Development, Hon Alhaji Boniface Abubakar Saddique; and the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh was in the region as part of a nationwide Ramadan Tour to pray with his Moslem brethren and seek Allah’s blessing for the nation.

He also offered special prayers on the tour for the sustenance and enhancement of the peace Ghana continues to enjoy in spite of the multiplicity of religious faiths in the country.

Sisi sworn in with vow on terrorism

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been sworn in for a second term as Egypt's president with a vow to fight "those who choose violence, terrorism and extremism".

Fighter jets flew overhead and there was a 21-gun salute as Mr Sisi took his oath in parliament.

Mr Sisi won 97% of the vote in March but on a turnout of just 41% and with his only opponent a Sisi supporter.

Supporters say he has brought much-needed stability, opponents that he has stifled democracy with arrests.

Egyptian air force fighter planes flew overhead releasing smoke in the colours of the national flag as Mr Sisi, 63, approached parliament in his motorcade.

After taking the oath of office he said in his speech he wanted to create a "common space" for Egyptians and that only those "who chose violence, terrorism and extremist thought as a way to impose their will" would be excluded.

The president has faced a series of jihadist attacks that have killed hundreds of military personnel and civilians, many of them in the northern Sinai peninsula.

Mr Sisi also said: "Together we face economic, social and political challenges and their negative effects on all aspects of life."

Although GDP has risen in the past year, economic recovery remains fragile and cuts to subsidies have proved unpopular. Egypt took a $12bn (£9bn) IMF loan in December 2016.

The retired field marshal led the military's overthrow of Egypt's first democratically elected president, Mohammed Morsi, in 2013 following protests against his rule.

Since then, he has overseen what human rights groups say is an unprecedented crackdown on dissent that has led to the detention of tens of thousands of people.

Activists have accused Mr Sisi of carrying out a wave of arrests targeting opponents since the election.

They say dozens of people have been detained on charges including spreading fake news and belonging to illegal groups.

Popular musician and sympathiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A-plus, has been sued by the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekulful.

She is seeking an interlocutory injunction to restrain A-Plus from making “further defamatory comments” about her.

A-Plus had accused Mrs Owusu-Ekulful of being involved in a shady deal at the Communications Ministry. He also alleged that the government was using the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwasi Nyanatkyi’s saga to cover up for her in the $89/178million GVG Kelni scandal.”

He said, “Kwesi Nyantakyi is only being sacrificed to cover up the 89/178 million dollars GVG Kelni Stinking scandal.”

The Communications Minister, through her lawyers, demanded an apology and retraction from A-Plus or be sued. However, the musician refused to apologise and retract, resulting in the suit against him.

“We are also instructed to notify you to render an unqualified apology in the same medium and prominence in the manner that your libellous publication was done. Please be informed that if you fail to retract and apologise to our client in or before Friday 1st June 2018, we shall proceed to court to vindicate our client’s rights without any further recourse to you,” her lawyers stated.

Convicted kidnapper 'rejected' by prison authorities on health grounds

0

Prison authorities in Kumasi say they cannot accommodate a convicted criminal because he has a health condition they suspect could be contagious.

Twenty-six-year-old, Collins James Kodah, has been jailed 10 years for unlawfully taking possession of two children of KNUST Basic School last month.

Police escorted him to Kumasi Central Prisons to begin the jail term only for authorities to turn him away, sparking off widespread discontent among the police.

A collaboration between police and telecom operator, MTN, led to the arrest of Mr Kodah and the kidnapped children at is hide-out in Asante Akim Agogo, last month.

He was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court on May 18, 2018.

Mr Kodah was, however, refused entry to Kumasi Central Prison because officials suspect his strange skin condition could be leprosy.

He has since been taken back to police custody.

The Nurse-in-Charge of the Kumasi Central Prison Infirmary, Superintendent Cephas Nuwordu, told Nhyira FM, Mr Kodah's condition needs further investigations after the convict told him he has been suffering from leprosy.

"As soon as a prisoner appears, the first point of assessment is the gate. The gateman alerted me that they brought in a prisoner that looked strange and when I looked at the prisoner, actually he looked white from head to toe.

"As soon as I mentioned that 'this looks like leprosy', the suspect said, 'yes it is leprosy,'" Supt Nuwordu said.

"This one needs investigations to confirm what even the prisoner told me… and then start him on medication before bringing him.

"We never reject any person but the police must start from somewhere and then we continue," he said.

Supt. Nuwordu accuses some police investigators of dumping sick persons at the prisons when there are no facilities to take care of them.

He said the safe custody of suspects and inmates should be a collaboration between police, judiciary and prison service.

"Once upon a time,  they [police] said 'the prisoner should be with you I'm going to buy the drugs and come'. The policeman left. We didn't see him again.  It's very common. That is one of the reasons why I cannot accept them again when you don't bring drugs with them", he recounted.

0

Ghana’s gold output rose to 2.805 million ounces in 2017, up 10.2 percent from the previous year, data from the Ghana Chamber of Mines showed on Friday.

The growth reflected a general increase in output across most of the 12 mining firms operating in the West African country, the chamber said.

Total gold revenues amounted to $3.52 billion in 2017, up from $3.25 billion the year before.

Ghana is Africa’s second largest gold producer after South Africa. Mining firms operating in the country include Newmont Mining Corporation, Gold Fields, Anglogold Ashanti and Asanko Gold.

Manganese production increased to three million tonnes in 2017 from two million the year before. However diamond output declined to 86,924 carats from 143,000 carats the previous year, the chamber said.

Morocco World Cup bid passed by FIFA despite 'high risk' areas

0

Morocco's bid to host the 2026 World Cup has passed a Fifa inspection – but is deemed "high risk" in three areas.

The North African country will compete with a joint United States, Canada and Mexico bid in a vote on 13 June.

Morocco scored 2.7 out of five in Fifa's test while the joint bid scored four, with no "high risk" areas.

Fifa said of the 14 stadiums submitted by Morocco, nine were yet to be built and the remaining five "require significant renovation or upgrading".

Only two of the 14 stadiums were deemed to have "sufficient levels of accommodation" resulting in a second "high risk" conclusion.

A third area of analysis – accommodation and transport combined – was also deemed "high risk".

However, Fifa's taskforce said it had obtained "enforceable government guarantees" which state the 12 host cities in Morocco will have a sufficient number of hotel rooms by 2026.

The North American bid did not contain any high risk elements but had three medium risk measures – government support, human rights and labour standards, and organising costs.

In analysing the human rights aspect of the bid, it was concluded new entry regulations being proposed by the US could damage "discrimination-free entry" to the country.

World football's governing body could have disqualified Morocco had the bid scored less than two overall.

Both candidates now have to be approved at a meeting on 10 June before a vote of the 207 Fifa members three days later.

Morocco has said it needs to spend almost $16bn (£12bn) on infrastructure for what will be the first 48-team World Cup, while the North American bid does not require any tournament-specific building work.

Morocco has unsuccessfully bid four times before, in 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010, the latter occasion being when South Africa became the first African nation to host the World Cup.

The United States hosted the tournament in 1994 and bid unsuccessfully for 2022, while Mexico staged the 1970 and 1986 tournaments.
