The people of Sokpoe traditional area in the Volta region on Good Friday marked their annual Tortsogbeza festival.

Residents of the area did a perfect and lively re-enactment of the migration of their forefathers from their ancestral home in Notsie, Togo to their present home near Sogakofe in South Tongu of the Volta Region.

The re-enactment of their migration coupled with their rich culture was done on Volta Lake.

Atinka Media Village is the lead media partner for this year’s celebration.

Some of the residents told Atinka News that they were happy to be part of this year’s celebration since it projects their rich culture.

Brief History

The people of Sokpoe formed a section of the Ewes who are believed to have migrated from Ketu in the Benin Empire in about the 15th and 16th centuries. They first settled in the walled city of Notsie Kingdom situated between Tsevie in Togoland and Agbome in Dahomey (now the Republic of Benin). The tyrannical rule of their King Agor Akorli forced them to flee in large families or tribes (now described as clans) westwards, in about the 17th century.
