The People’s National Convention (PNC), has expressed it utmost disappointment over alleged comments made by a Senior Political Analyst, Dr Kwasi Jonah, which sought to justify the overthrow of Dr Hilla Limann by the late Jerry John Ralwings in 1981.
Dr Kwasi Jonah in his submission on some media platforms in Accra, expressed some views which alluded to the fact that, the late Jerry John Rawlings’ decision to overthrow the Limann-led administration was justifiable.
However, the PNC in a statement signed by its Communication Director, Ishaq Awudu, questioned the academic prowess of Dr Kwasi Jonah, a revered governance and political analyst, in making such an unfortunate remark.
According to the statement, it was painstaking to hear such a learned analyst like Dr Kwasi Jonah justify someone’s parochial and selfish interest which motivated him to overthrow a constitutionally elected government with barely 28 months after assuming office.
According to the statement, the 1981 coup was an affront to achievements of the Late Dr Hilla Limann, with regards to improving the country’s fortunes through numerous secured bilateral trade agreements, the implementation of laws to protect the fundamental human rights of every Ghanaian and as well, the introduction of policies that steered back the country on the path of economic growth and success.
“The PNC therefore finds it hard to believe that, an academic in the person of Dr Kwasi Jonah could utter such unguarded statements mostly associated with pedestrian party foot-soldiers. The party wants the learned analyst to issue an unqualified apology or provide basis for justifying such a heinous crime which has gone unpunished for decades now,” PNC stated..
