The Programmes Manager, Expanded Programme on Immunisation at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Kwame Amponsah Achiano, has made it clear that the GHS never said it anywhere that covid had left as people perceived after the restrictions were eased.
He said although the people were asked to continue observing the protocols even after the restrictions were lifted, most people totally ignored it.
That, he believes has contributed to the rise in covid cases in the Country.
In March 2022, the Government of Ghana eased major restrictions it imposed on the people to fight the covid 19 pandemic.
In a televised address on March 27, President Nana Akufo-Addo announced that for the fully vaccinated, outdoor functions can resume, and travelers no longer have to take covid-19 tests to enter the country, among other changes.
Although the covid cases have been low for some months, the Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu Bekoe recently disclosed that the Covid-19 cases have risen over the last two weeks.”
“Our latest data shows about 300 cases. This show that the virus is not totally out of the system. We also have flu (H3N2) going around, so a number of people are coughing and sneezing. Most of the test results come out as either H3N2 or Covid-19.”
He stated that the majority of the cases were recorded in the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Dr Kwame Amponsah Achiano said,”I do not believe that Ghana Health Service has said it anywhere that covid is gone.”
He again said,” Every time the virus changes itself, it brings a different wave, it could be that this time, we are getting something else. Normally, the virus changes itself and so most of the times, we educate that the only or most important way to prevent it is to protect ourselves. The most important way of protecting ourselves is the vaccination. In the advanced countries, when you take about 10 people, eight have been vaccinated and so even if the cases go up, their hospitals will not be full and that is why we are still educating people.”
When asked what exactly could be the cause of rising cases, he replied, “For now, I cannot tell what is causing that. Most of the times when you see that the cases are rising, it means that the virus is changing it self, but for now, I cannot tell because it’s early days.”
Meanwhile, he encouraged persons who have not taken their vaccines to do so in order to protect themselves from getting it and as well reduce the cases.
