Organized Labour is warning the government and management of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to halt the process of selling 60 percent of SSNIT’s interests in some hotels to a private company.
According to them, they find it difficult to understand SSNIT’s interest in selling these hotels to a company belonging to a Minister of State.
Their call comes on the back of North Tongu Member of Parliament, Okudzeto Ablakwa, petitioning the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to probe the sale of six hotels including Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and the Trust Lodge Hotel to Bryan Acheampong.
In a response letter by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Rock City Hotel owned by Bryan Acheampong offered the best for the 60% stake in its hotels.
Reacting to the concerns in a brief press conference in Accra, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress(Ghana), Dr. Yaw Baah said if their call for the process to be discontinued failed, they would embark on a nationwide strike.
“Leadership of Organised Labour was briefed by the Workers’ Representatives on the Board of Trustees of SSNIT that they had collectively raised objections to the process and had advised that the process be halted but seems management of SSNIT isn’t ready to listen.
Dr. Baah added, ” The original proposal of the sale of SSNIT’s interests in six hotels has now been reduced to four. We hold the view that this renders the whole process null and void.
“The proposed payment terms varied from the original MOU, based on the recommendation of the Transaction Advisor. We also find it difficult to understand why SSNIT’s interest in these hotels should be sold to a company owned by a Minister of State. We do not think is right,” he added.
