Suhum MP goes independent

Another New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament has declared his intention to go independent in the upcoming general elections, barely two weeks after former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, decided to run as an independent candidate for the Agona West seat in the 2024 general election.

The Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr. Oboafo Kwadwo Asante, announced his decision to become independent due to what he described as unfair conduct of the internal parliamentary primary, which he lost.

Mr. Asante emphasized that Suhum’s continued presence in Parliament would serve him better and that it was time for Ghanaians to put the country’s interests ahead of partisan politics.

“The people and ancestors of Suhum are solidly behind me to contest as an independent candidate,” he said.

He claimed that the party hierarchy manipulated the Suhum primary to favor Samuel Asiedu Bekoe, also known as Protozoa, the eventual winner.

the NPP leadership has not commented on the latest worrying development yet. However, it is most likely that the party’s leadership will prevail upon Mr. Asante to rescind his decision, just like in the case of Madam Cythhia Morrisson.

Addressing her constituents, Madam Morrison said, “God willing, I will be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”

However, speaking to Accra-based Citm on Thursday, August 22, 2024, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong emphasized the NPP’s focus on unity and its efforts to bring all members, including those considering independent runs, back into the party fold.

“As a political party, for this year’s election, which has been our mantra, we are going to break the eight. Breaking the eight means we need to do exceptional things and bring everybody on board. Our goal is to ensure the inclusion of all members of our party.
