Transport fares go up by 15% effective Feb 26

Transport tariffs in the country will go up by 15% effective Saturday, February 26th 2022.

The increment will affect shared taxis, intra-city (trotro) and intercity long distance journeys.

The transport unions had earlier proposed a 30 percent upward adjustment, but after engaging government on what percentage the upward adjustment should be, the unions settled on 15%.

In a statement on Tuesday, February 22, the Road Transport Operators revealed that the group, in line with the administrative arrangements on public transport fares, and after an intense negotiations with stakeholders, have agreed to increase public transport fares by 15 per cent.

According to the statement the change is due to current trends in the international market and its impact on domestic prices.

The statement added that the unions have also resolved with stakeholders to review transport fares whenever the cumulative net effect is 10 percent or more.

Commercial transport operators have been advised to comply with the new fares and post same at three loading terminals.

“In line with the administrative arrangements on public transport fares, the Road Transport Operators after intense negotiations with stakeholders and in consideration of the plight of drivers, Commuters and the General Public, have agreed to increase public transport fares by 15 per cent.

“Due to current trends in the international market and its impact on domestic prices we have resolved with stakeholders to review transport fares whenever the cumulative net effect is 10 percent or more.”
