The General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council (GTRCC), Mr. Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, says transportation fares have not been adjusted because the Council wants to be sure if the appreciation of the Cedi against the Dollar is sustainable or a “nine-day wonder.”
According to him, sometime ago, there was a similar incident where fares were adjusted and within a short time, fuel prices went up and some of the transport operators were forced to increase the fares; therefore, there is a need to monitor the performance of the cedi for some time before any drastic measures can be taken.
GUTA in a statement called on the business community to adjust the prices of goods and services to reflect the gains being made by the national currency.
Despite the call, some business operators and owners, including the transport sector have still not adjusted their prices.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah explained that it is not that the GTRCC is unconcerned about calls to reduce prices of goods and services, adding that they have to consider the same factors and procedures while increasing transport fares.
Aside from that, he said the fuel price as at now had not reached a point where transportation fares should be reduced, expressing hope that the fuel price is reduced again.
“We have not reduced the fares because we are looking ahead to see if the cedi’s appreciation is a “nine-day wonder” or if it is something that will last. If you can’t tell whether it’s sustainable or not and lower the fares, but the fares immediately rise again, you may have to raise them. That is what happened, and we reduced, and then the fuel price increased, forcing some to raise their fares,” he stated.
Meanwhile, he said if the appreciation of the cedi is sustainable, and the price of fuel is maintained, the Council will consider reducing the fares.
