Security analyst Nana Appiah Owusu has called on the legal team representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to urgently seek relief through the courts in response to what he describes as unlawful detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Speaking in an interview on Atinka TV News with Obaa Yaa Wusua, Mr. Owusu said the proper course of action now lies with Wontumi’s lawyers, who must act swiftly to challenge the GH¢50 million bail condition and secure his release through legal channels.
“I expect Wontumi’s lawyers to drag EOCO to court to secure bail for their client. If they believe the bail condition is excessive or unjust, the courts are the proper place to challenge it,” – Nana Appiah Owusu said.
Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently under investigation for serious charges including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. He remains in custody after being unable to meet the GH¢50 million bail condition imposed by EOCO.
Mr. Owusu stressed that the law is clear on suspects’ rights during investigations. If a suspect fails to meet bail conditions within 48 hours, the detaining authority must return to court to justify continued detention.
“Once the suspect cannot meet bail, it is not for EOCO to detain him indefinitely. They must go back to court to either review the bail terms or seek a warrant for further detention. Anything outside this process is illegal,” he explained.
He warned that failure to follow due process not only violates human rights but could also expose the state to legal action.
