Vivian Adu writes: Musings of a MOTHER on Mother’s Day

Motherhood is a journey filled with ups and downs, joys, and challenges. For many women, myself included, the transition to motherhood can be overwhelming, especially when it comes unexpectedly. As a mother overwhelmed by the whole experience, I find myself constantly juggling multiple responsibilities, from work to household chores, all while striving to find a balance that seems elusive.

Upon becoming a mother for the first time, I found myself in an unfamiliar world without any guidance or expectations. Feeding schedules, diaper changes, and sleepless nights suddenly consumed my days. As much as I love children, the weight of responsibility often feels crushing, especially when combined with the demands of a career and household duties.

One of the biggest struggles I face is trying to balance my work life with my responsibilities at home. As a working mother, there’s constant pressure to excel in both roles, yet there are only a few hours in a day. I find myself constantly torn between spending quality time with my kids and meeting deadlines at work. The guilt of not being able to fully devote myself to either aspect of my life weighs heavily on me.

It often feels like there’s never enough time or energy to get everything done, leaving me feeling drained and overwhelmed.

Despite the struggles, there are moments of pure joy that make it all worthwhile. Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and hearing their laughter fill the house are the moments that remind me why motherhood is so precious. It’s not always easy, but the love I have for my children is unwavering, and it gives me the strength to keep going, even on the toughest days.

To my family and friends who have been part of this journey, I appreciate your continuous support and guidance.

Today is Mother’s Day, and it’s important to recognize and celebrate the incredible strength and resilience of mothers everywhere. Mothers, whether they navigate the challenges of unprepared motherhood like myself or excel in their roles with grace and ease, deserve our honor and appreciation for everything they do.

Mother’s Day is more than just a day for flowers and gifts; it’s a day to acknowledge the sacrifices and selflessness of mothers who dedicate their lives to caring for their families. It’s a day to say thank you to the women who work tirelessly behind the scenes, often without recognition or praise.

It is also important to celebrate not only the mothers who have fully embraced this journey, but also the women who have not yet become mothers. We should also acknowledge and honor them for the strength, resilience, and love they contribute to the world.

Being a mother is not defined by the number of children you have or whether you’ve given birth. It’s about the love you give, the sacrifices you make, and the impact you have on the lives of those around you. So let us celebrate all women, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and friends who nurture and care for others with unwavering devotion and compassion.

I say this to the women who are not yet mothers: Your ability to bear children does not determine your worth. You are valuable and worthy of celebration, just as you are. Whether you choose to become a mother or not, your contributions to the world are significant and deserving of recognition.

Happy Mother’s Day!

With Love!
