The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr Stanley Martey, has assured members of the public that their flowing tap water is safe, clean and free from contaminants as a result of the Akosombo dam spillage.

It was reported that the excess water that has flooded communities affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage has been contaminated and unsafe for use.

Other reports have also suggested the current situation in the affected areas has resulted in a cholera outbreak.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Mr Martey clarified that although the raw water which have flooded the affected areas is contaminated, the ones that pass through the taps have gone through stringent measures and have passed with WHO standards and therefore safe.

“The Raw water could be contaminated; that is the raw water in the Volta, could be contaminated, but they go through stringent processes before we pump it out for people to drink.

Everybody must have that assurance that if water is running through your tap, then it means that it has gone through all the processes, all the world class or global treatment before it comes through our system.

Because the water in the river is untreated, he recommended people to utilize tap water.

Meanwhile, he said the company in collaboration with National Security and NADMO have provided a service point where they can go and fetch water from there to serve the communities with tankers.

He, therefore, assured the public that the water from these services is safe and therefore affected residents can use it.

“What has happened at Akosombo and the Volta Region is worrying. It is painful and we all sympathise with them. What I want to say is that Ghana Water Company Limited is really concerned and it has affected us as well. So, whatever we have to do to ensure that they have clean water in their camps or places they have relocated to, we are on course ,” he said.
