The Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mr Moses Anim has disclosed that 550 fisherfolks have already benefited from the Ghana fisheries recovery activity.

The Ghana Fisheries Recovery activity is to help aid fisher folks during the Closed Season which starts from July 1 to August 31, 2023.

The artisanal and inshore fleets are to observe the closed season from July 1 to July 31, 2023, whilst that of industrial trawl vessels takes effect from July 1 to August 31, 2023.

The Ghana Fisheries Recovery activity seeks to train fisherfolks in masonry, carpentry, dressmaking, hairdressing, electronics and auto engineering, among other things, in selected communities along the coast.

On a whole, it seeks to provide training for 8,000 fisherfolks beginning with the 550 persons.

After the training, the Fisheries Ministry is expected to support the beneficiaries by setting up businesses in order to earn extra income from their trade.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Mr Moses Anim noted that the support cannot take care of the challenges of the entire fisherfolks for the whole period.

He said the support given them was to also cushion them while their major source of livelihood was put on hold.

Meanwhile he said the closed season was important for everyone in the country, calling on all fisherfolks to observe it as expected.
