Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Frimpong-Boateng, says the sentencing of Aisha Huang is not an end to the galamsey menace.
En Huang, also known as Aisha Huang, was sentenced to four years, six months in prison.
Aisha Huang, who has also been slapped with a GH¢48,000 fine, is also to be deported after serving her jail term.
The sentence was after the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court presided over by Justice Lydia Osei-Marfo, found her guilty on the charge of undertaking a mining operation without a licence, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation and the illegal employment of foreigners.
She was also convicted on her own plea in the charge of entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.
Speaking exclusively on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Nana Yaw Fianko, Professor Frimpong-Boateng expressed worry over the discussion around the 4 year sentence of Aisha Huang.
According to Professor Frimpong-Boateng, Aisha Huang’s case was one of the many cases of destruction to the water bodies.
He revealed that the number of years Aisha Huang is serving in prison is not relevant at the moment adding that a solution to the menace is paramount.
“What we need in Ghana now has got nothing to do with the lady. Even if Aisha Huang goes to prison for a 1000 years, the destruction of our water bodies will not stop. The destruction of our farms that is affecting our crops and vegetable produce is what we should be discussing and not a sentence which is a minute aspect of the whole galamsey issue,” Prof Frimpong added.
