Security of tenure for heads of security agencies will boost professionalism– Peter Toobu

The Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has proposed that implementing “security of tenure” for heads of security agencies in Ghana could significantly enhance professionalism within the sector.

In an exclusive interview on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Nana Fianko, Peter Lanchene Toobu emphasized that a security of tenure would help restore public confidence in the country’s security institutions, regardless of the ruling government.

The MP stressed that this move would be beneficial for Ghana’s development.

“It will bring a higher level of professionalism to the security agencies. It’s in the best interest of Ghana’s progress to allow these leaders the space to demonstrate their commitment to the nation, rather than partisan politics. At the security level, it’s crucial that we think of ourselves as Ghanaians first.”

He argued that in such a divided environment, security agencies should serve as a unifying force. “Security should be apolitical. When appointed, you should serve Ghana, not a political party or government,” he explained.

The lawmaker also expressed concern over the declining standards in Ghana’s security services, attributing this decline to the loss of public trust, which has led some Ghanaians to take the law into their own hands, even going so far as to attack security personnel.

“The fact that police and soldiers are fighting like street boys indicates that something is seriously wrong. Recently, the military issued a statement urging civilians to stop attacking security personnel. There was a time when men in uniform commanded respect, but that respect is gradually eroding due to how these men and women are sometimes misused. This misapplication will eventually come back to haunt us all,” Peter Lanchene Toobu warned.
