A galamsey (Illegal Mining) pit at Nkonteng in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti region has caved in killing a 23-year-old man identified as Osei Kwabena.
Three others managed to escape and are currently in critical condition at Nkawie-Toase Hospital, while the deceased remains at Afari Community Hospital for further autopsy and investigations.
During a briefing, Koyim Mahama Iddrisu, the Director of the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal NADMO, expressed concern over the alarming rate at which galamsey pits in Nkonteng are claiming lives, given that this is the eighth instance of such calamity in a year.
To address this ongoing disaster, Hon. Koyim Mahama Iddrisu advised the youth to take their time and trust in God’s timing.
He also advocated for stakeholder engagement forums with opinion leaders from Kobeng and Nkonteng enclaves, facilitated by the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Assembly.
