Wa West MP and former Executive Secretary to the IGP, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, has stated that he is not surprised by the jubilation among some police officers following the removal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu-Darkwa, he noted that the changes in police leadership are not unusual and should be seen as part of governance.
Hon. Toobu emphasized that Ghanaians voted for John Dramani Mahama to “reset” the country, and such a reset cannot be achieved without addressing security sector concerns. According to him, while some had anticipated Dr. Dampare’s removal from January 8, they left the decision to the president.
He acknowledged COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the new IGP, as a leader with strong human relations and expertise in intelligence gathering. He urged him to learn from both the successes and shortcomings of his predecessor, stating, “Take the best tactics and delete the bad ones.”

Touching on the police service’s internal challenges, Hon. Toobu highlighted that denying or delaying promotions is one of the most painful things a police officer can experience. He advised the new IGP to prioritize fair promotions to boost morale within the service.
While commending Dr. Dampare’s contributions to police reforms, he stressed that the focus should now be on the future.
“Dampare has done his best, but the big news is that we have a new IGP, and that is Dr. Yohuno,” – he stated.
Hon. Toobu concluded that what matters most is a secure Ghana, and it is now up to President Mahama’s new security team to deliver on that expectation.
