President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, has issued a strong warning against individuals and businesses constructing buildings on waterways, vowing that all illegal structures obstructing drainage systems will be pulled down.
Speaking at the 2025 Eid-ul-Fitr Celebration at the Black Star Square in Accra, he expressed concern over the increasing number of unauthorized constructions, which contribute to severe flooding and destruction of property.
“With the rainy season approaching, we cannot allow reckless construction on waterways to continue. I am aware that some private businesses, in collusion with certain chiefs, are taking over water retention areas, Ramsar sites, and flood-prone zones for illegal developments. This must stop,”- President Mahama stated firmly.
He emphasized that all such structures will be demolished, and those who flouted building regulations will be held accountable. “We will not allow a few selfish individuals to endanger the lives and livelihoods of countless others,” – he warned.
Currently, thousands of illegal structures have been identified on waterways across Accra and other parts of the country, worsening perennial flooding.
