NRSA Commends Ghana Highway Authority for Safety Improvements on Biremso Bridge

Biremso Bridge

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has commended the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) for swiftly improving safety conditions on the Biremso Bridge in the Eastern Region.

This follows the installation of essential road safety furniture by the GHA, after the NRSA issued a formal notice urging action in response to concerns raised by transport operators about the deteriorating state of the bridge and its potential to cause accidents.

In a press statement, the NRSA praised the GHA for its decisive response, highlighting the importance of such proactive measures in preventing road traffic crashes.

However, the Authority expressed concern over ongoing driver indiscipline along the route, especially instances of excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking near the Biremso Bridge, which it says continue to endanger lives and undermine the impact of safety upgrades.

The NRSA reminded motorists of the national speed limits—80 km/h on highways, 50 km/h in urban areas, and 30 km/h in settlements—and cautioned drivers against overtaking on curves and hills.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility,” the NRSA emphasized, calling on drivers to comply with traffic laws or face prosecution.

The successful collaboration between transport operators, the NRSA, and the GHA was described as a model example of how stakeholder cooperation can improve road infrastructure and protect lives across the country.
