A Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jennifer Oforiwa Queen, has dismissed reports suggesting that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, widow of the late Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been selected by the party to contest in the upcoming by-election.

In an interview on Atinka AM Drive with host Ekow Budu Sam, Ms. Queen stated that Mrs. Kumi is currently not in the right state to engage in political activities, following the recent passing of her husband.

Speculation around Mrs. Kumi’s potential candidacy had grown in recent days, with some drawing comparisons to similar situations where widows of deceased MPs—such as Lydia Alhassan and Ophelia Hayford—went on to win their husbands’ parliamentary seats. However, Jennifer Queen insisted that such parallels are premature and unfounded in this case.

The NPP has yet to announce an official candidate for the Akwatia by-election following the sudden death of Ernest Yaw Kumi.
