Ignore Online Trolls, Seek Justice When Defamed – Ohemaa Woyeje

Ohemaa Woyeje

One of Ghana’s leading media personalities and a respected voice in journalism — Ohemaa Woyeje, also an entrepreneur, has added her voice to the ever-evolving debate surrounding the influence of new media on society.

Appearing on Entertainment Lounge hosted by Roman Fada on Atinka TV, Ohemaa offered a candid, professional and thought-provoking take on the role of both traditional and new media in Ghana’s entertainment and information landscape.

According to her, the emergence of new media — especially social media — has undeniably changed the game for many, providing economic opportunities and serving as a “cash cow” for a growing number of creators and media startups.

“Many of the new media setups are cashing out very well, some, then traditional media” she stated. “They are making the gains.”

However, she was quick to highlight the downsides, especially when it comes to the lack of professionalism and accountability.

“From a professional angle, we can’t say no — this is where the world has grown to. But people must be discerning. When traditional media goofs, you can go after them directly. But for new media, it is very difficult,” she noted, urging the public to consume content with care.

Ohemaa Woyeje warned of the dangers posed by content creators who lack training and often hide their identities.

“Many of them haven’t had any professional training. Many of them don’t come with their identity. Some are even depressed and are just creating something for attention,” she cautioned.

Speaking on online abuse and insults often directed at public figures, Ohemaa offered words of wisdom for both celebrities and the general public: “When someone says something about you online, don’t feel too hurt. Some of the comments are like a madman chasing you — you don’t have to react.”

She explained that some individuals try to provoke reactions to gain relevance. “They try to leverage your brand to be relevant. If it’s just an insult like someone saying your waist is crooked and you know it’s not, just let it go,” she said.

However, she made it clear that if the insults cross the line into defamation, victims should not hesitate to take legal action.

“When they defame you badly and you think you can pursue it legally, do it. No matter how long it takes, justice will be served,” she emphasized.

Ohemaa also spoke about the shifting power dynamics between traditional and new media, stressing the need for balance and accountability across both platforms. “This new media thing is very influential, and while it brings opportunities, it must be handled responsibly. People should be trained, guided, and above all, honest,” she said.

As a seasoned media personality, Ohemaa Woyeje continues to use her voice to educate, advocate, and inspire a new generation of media consumers and content creators. Her message is clear: embrace the new media wave, but do so with caution, professionalism, and purpose.
