The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and the government to intensify efforts to eliminate fake and substandard mattresses from the Ghanaian market.
He warned that the growing influx of counterfeit mattresses poses serious health risks to citizens and is crippling local manufacturers, who pay taxes and support national development.
Mr. Dwumfour made the call in Accra during the presentation of packages to selected winners of the 29th GJA Awards, including Godwin Asediba, the P.A.V. Ansah Journalist of the Year, and Ebenezer Madugu, winner of the Akoto Ampaw Award for Democracy and Good Governance.

He expressed concern that although the GSA had recently clamped down on some fake products, the operation “became a 90-day wonder,” as the illegal traders quickly returned to the market.
“Our checks show that these harmful products are back. Many of them are unhealthy, but because they are cheap, people buy them out of financial distress—only to end up calling sickness upon themselves,” – he said.

The GJA President challenged journalists to help expose the “faceless” individuals behind the illegal trade. He announced a special award for any journalist who undertakes impactful investigative work on the matter ahead of the 30th GJA Media Awards. AshFoam, he added, has also pledged GH¢5,000 plus products to support such an effort.
Mr. Dwumfour emphasized that protecting local businesses was critical, especially companies like AshFoam that consistently partner with the GJA. He noted that the association could not successfully organize major events without the support of corporate Ghana.
Speaking at the event, Nana Yaw Ampem-Darko Antwi, Marketing and Communications Manager of AshFoam, reaffirmed the company’s long-standing partnership with the GJA. He said AshFoam, established in 1976, remains proud of producing quality Made-in-Ghana products and values the role journalists play in national development and business growth.

He assured that the company would continue supporting the GJA and encourage excellence in journalism.
The brief ceremony saw award winners receive product packages from AshFoam as part of the company’s contribution to promoting quality journalism in Ghana.
