Authorities have launched investigations after violence disrupted the District Schools Athletics Games held in Agona Swedru on February 19, an event that was expected to celebrate student athleticism and unity.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the incident followed a confrontation between students from two participating schools, which escalated into widespread disorder.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that tensions between students of Swedru School of Business and Obrachire Senior High Technical School turned violent during the games.
According to reports, an Obrachire student was attacked amid the chaos and was struck with sticks and stones before bystanders intervened to de-escalate the situation. Videos circulating on social media show moments of confusion as onlookers gathered around the injured student.
The victim was later transported to a medical facility for treatment.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the Ghana Police Service said it had taken note of the viral footage and had commenced investigations.
“The Ghana Police Service has sighted a viral video in which a group of people are seen pelting stones at a student.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated in due course.
The Service strongly condemns the violence and assures the public that all perpetrators will be identified and brought to justice.”
Authorities have appealed for calm as investigations continue, stressing the need for discipline and safety at school sporting events.
