Two suspects, believed to be part of a syndicate which trails people who withdraw money from the banks within the Metropolis together with eleven other suspected cyber fraudsters, all Nigerians, have been arrested by the Tema Police.
The Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Edward Johnson Akrofi-Oyirifi speaking to Atinka News said on October 26, 2018 at about 11am, Police received a complaint of theft of GHC14,000 a man had withdrawn from a bank at Community One and kept in his vehicle as drove to Francophone near the Ghana Water Company where he parked to make some enquires.
The man, he noted returned to his vehicle shortly afterwards only to detect that the driver’s side door had been opened and the money stolen.
According to him, the police proceeded to the scene and preliminary investigation from a close Circuit Television, CCTV, camera captured one of the suspects with the money, who was later whisked away by a private silver coloured Toyota Corolla, (registration number withheld). The police chief said his team mounted surveillance on the said car and its occupants until November 2, 2018 at about 11:00am when the same vehicle was again spotted by Police at the Meridian Cluster of banks with the two suspects.
The suspects; Frank Inyang Thomas, 40,and Segun Mustapha, 36, both Nigerians were arrested. On interrogation, the suspects told police that they usually trail unsuspecting victims from the bank to a parking location, break into their cars and steal their monies. They led the Police to their Abokobi No.2 abode in Sakumono, where further investigation led to the arrest of 11 others, all Nigerians living in the same house and seemingly engaging in Cyber Fraud activities.
DCOP Akrofi-Oyirifi added that, the eleven suspects per preliminary investigation are not part of the robbery incidents but are believed to be cyber fraudsters. However, an dentification parade will be conducted for the public to ascertain whether they are also robbers or not. He added that with additional vehicles given to the command, they have intensified both day and night patrols including motorbikes to clamp down on the criminals, asking the public to furnish the police with any information for a swift action.
