The Speaker for Ghana Institute of Journalism’s (GIJ) House of Parliament, Nash Odei, says the current management of the school ignored pleas from the GETFund, Student Loan Trust Fund to allow students sit for the exams which contributed to the riot.
GIJ students on Sunday 2nd December 2018 demonstrated over the inability of some students to sit for the ongoing end-of -semester examination.
Over 600 students of GIJ were unable to register for the examinations for failure to pay full fees.
However, speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Speaker for Ghana Institute of Journalism’s (GIJ) House of Parliament, Nash Odei stated that most of the students are on GETFund and Student Loan Trust Fund.
According to him, these loans have not been disbursed by the appropriate quarters which have resulted in the delay in payment of fees.
“GETFund and Student loan trust Fund wrote to the school explaining the circumstances which has led to some students not being able to pay theirs fees, which I was reliable informed that the current management ignored,” he added.
He noted that the former management of GIJ led by the Dr. Wilberforce Dzisah allowed students with such concerns to write the exams and pay after sometime.
The new rector for GIJ, Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, early this year announced that effective the second semester of the next academic year, students of GIJ would not be allowed to re-sit failed papers as well as papers they did not sit for.
Universities usually make arrangement for students to rewrite failed papers, others.
According to Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, the writing of resist examination gives room for students to be lazy during examination, causing them to fail.
This contributed to the demonstration because failure of the students to sit for the exams would mean that they would have to start the respective programs all over.
