Political Loyalty Should Not Override Patriotism — Nunoo-Mensah

Former Chief of Defence Staff, Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, has expressed concern over the growing influence of partisan politics in Ghana, warning that national development cannot be achieved when political loyalty is placed above patriotism.

Speaking in an interview on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie Morning Show, the retired military officer stressed the need for Ghanaians to prioritise the national interest over party affiliations if the country is to make meaningful progress.

“National development cannot happen when political loyalty is placed above patriotism,” he stated.

Brigadier General (Rtd.) Nunoo-Mensah further lamented what he described as the increasing deterioration of political discourse in the country, noting that the current nature of politics is negatively affecting national cohesion and development.

“Politics today has become ugly, and it’s hurting the nation,” he added.

According to him, Ghana’s development agenda requires a collective commitment from both leaders and citizens to place the welfare of the country above partisan considerations.

He urged political actors to promote constructive engagement, tolerance, and policies that advance the national interest, emphasizing that sustainable development can only be achieved when patriotism takes precedence over political divisions.

The former Chief of Defence Staff’s remarks add to ongoing public discussions about governance, political accountability, and the role of national unity in Ghana’s development journey.
