Ghana has repatriated a total of 6,936 citizens in distress from various countries since 2025, according to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The Minister said the government, working with its partners, had facilitated the return of thousands of Ghanaians who found themselves in difficult or unsafe circumstances in different parts of the world.
In a social media post following a media briefing, Mr Ablakwa disclosed that 4,972 Ghanaians had been repatriated from multiple countries since 2025.
Among the countries from which Ghanaian citizens have been brought back are Libya, Cambodia and Kuwait, where some Ghanaians had faced circumstances that required government intervention and assistance.
The Minister said the number had increased significantly following the recent evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa.
With the addition of the South African evacuation, the total number of Ghanaians repatriated since 2025 now stands at 6,936.
Mr Ablakwa said the government’s interventions were part of its broader responsibility to protect Ghanaian citizens wherever they may be in the world.
He assured Ghanaians abroad that the government would continue to respond to situations in which citizens face threats to their safety, welfare or dignity.
“We shall always rise to the challenge and protect the dignity and welfare of Ghanaians everywhere in the world,” the Minister stated.
He emphasised that the safety of Ghanaians abroad remains a national concern and that the government would continue to work with relevant partners to assist citizens who require urgent support.
The recent evacuation from South Africa accounted for nearly 2,000 of the citizens brought back to Ghana.
The operation formed part of efforts to respond to the circumstances facing Ghanaian nationals in the country and ensure that those affected could return home safely.
Mr Ablakwa’s disclosure brings the total number of citizens assisted through repatriation efforts since 2025 to nearly 7,000.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry is responsible for providing consular assistance and coordinating with Ghana’s diplomatic missions and international partners when Ghanaians abroad face emergencies or situations requiring government intervention.
The Minister reiterated the government’s determination to protect Ghanaian citizens regardless of where they live or travel.
“A Ghanaian under threat amounts to all of us under threat,” Mr Ablakwa said, underscoring the government’s position that the welfare and security of Ghanaian citizens abroad are matters of national importance.
The government is expected to continue working with diplomatic missions, international organisations and other partners to respond to emergencies involving Ghanaians abroad and facilitate their safe return when necessary.
